Local church needs donations for Project Prom Dress event

- By Brandi Owczarz

The Closet of Hope ministry, a community-wide, non-profit faith based clothing ministry at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, is accepting donations of new and used prom, cocktail or bridesmaid dresses, along with prom shoes, for Project Prom Dress. The event will take place on Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church is located at 3882 Red Bud Road NE in Calhoun.

The idea of Project Prom Dress evolved from one of the recent Closet of Hope volunteer days, between moms with daughters who discussed the need in the community.

Recently, Project Prom Dress was able to provide a local student for a dress to attend Tim Tebow’s Night to Shine, the prom night experience for people with special needs ages 14 and older.

“In doing this, it is opening doors to be able to host this event within our county,” said Christine Page of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. She hopes to be able to provide dresses for girls throughout the community that need a dress from local proms this year. “We have received local school involvement, as well as many churches and individuals.”

According to Page, dresses and shoes will be provided to girls in need on an honor-based system. “If a school counselor from any surrounding schools calls and refers someone, they will be able to pick their dress before everyone else to ensure those that need a dress get a dress,” said Page.

In addition to dresses and shoes for prom season, volunteers are also needed prior to, and the day of, the event.

Several drop off location for Project Prom Dress have been established throughout the county and include:

Curl Up and Dye Salon, located at 350 South Wall Street in downtown Calhoun; Blush Salon, located at 1156 Cash Road in Calhoun; Calhoun High School, located at 355 South River Street in Calhoun; Gordon County Sheriff’s Office, located at 2700 US Highway 41 NW in Calhoun; and Salon 924, located at 924 Dews Pond Road SE in Calhoun.

According to Page, there is a lot of excitement in the community about this project. “We are starting to get dresses,” said Page. “In order for this to be successful, we will need more.”
