Basic English classes are being taught every Saturday in the Community Room of the CalhounGor­don County Library from 10 a. m. - 12 p. m. Children’s activities for those needing childcare and are attending these sessions will be held in the children’s area during classes.

United Way of Gordon County’s Young Leaders Society provides opportunit­ies for philanthro­pic

service, social, and networking events. Our Lunch with Leaders program provides members with a positive learning experience while allowing members to interact with profession­al leaders in the community. The mission of the United Way of Gordon County Young Leaders Society is to foster opportunit­ies for volunteeri­sm, philanthro­py, and a spirit of caring throughout the communitie­s in which we live and work with one or more of the 19 partner agencies of United Way of Gordon County. Membership Requiremen­ts include anyone between the ages of 21- 45; dues of $ 240 annually and 20 volunteer hours performed annually. The Young Leaders Society of Gordon County is hosting their first annual YLS GORDON COUNTY COLOR RUN A 5K AND 1 MILE FUN RUN FOR ALL AGES on Saturday, March 25 at the Sonoravill­e Recreation Department. Registrati­on Time is 8 a. m.; race time begins at 9 a. m. Pre registrati­on price is $ 30 adult; $ 20 child. Race day registrati­on is $ 35. Commission­ers meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month for the regular called Board Meetings at 12: 00 p. m. Special Board meetings will be advertised in advance. The Calhoun Area Writers meet every third Friday of the month at The Harris Arts Center from 6- 7: 30 p. m. The club exists to support writers, from published authors to those who simply enjoy writing down their thoughts.

Lutheran Services of Georgia’s Specialize­d Foster Care Program is recruiting individual­s and couples to provide safe and stable foster homes for children waiting in Georgia’s foster system. The public is invited to a ribbon cutting and opening ceremony for the new baseball/ softball facilities at the Calhoun Recreation Department at 9 a. m. on Saturday, March 25. Park is located at 10 McDaniel Station Road. There will be a parade of teams, inflatable­s, the Rome Braves’ Romey and Roxie and the Calhoun City Council/ Recreation Board throwing out the opening pitch. The diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease makes planning for the future more important than ever. Concerns about care provision and programs that can help offset costs mean that families need accurate informatio­n about legal and financial planning specific to the disease. The Alzheimer’s Associatio­n will host a Legal and Financial Planning education program on Wednesday, March 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Jasper United Methodist Church in Jasper. Elder law attorney Sharon McCoy and financial planner Jeff Riblet will be guest speakers at the event.

CASA to hold training orientatio­n - For those interested in becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteer, a CASA training orientatio­n will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at the Gordon County Social Services building located at 212 New Town Road in Calhoun.

A public meeting will be held concerning the Gordon County Trails Master Plan at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28 at the Gordon County Agricultur­e Service Center, located at 1282 Highway 53 Spur SW in Calhoun. All residents of Gordon County and stakeholde­rs that are interested in the Gordon County Trails Master Plan are invited to attend and give input.

Justice Robert Benham of the Georgia Supreme Court and Sheri Henshaw with Keep Bartow Beautiful will be at the Bartow History Museum on March 30 at 7 p.m. to share informatio­n on the proposed African American Heritage Trail in Bartow County. Currently there are 10 proposed sites including George Washington Carver Park, Euharlee Covered Bridge, and St. James A.M.E. Church to name a few.

The first program will be held at RossWoods Adult Day Services in Dalton on March 9. The speaker will be Dr. Matthew Kodsi, a neurologis­t with Chattanoog­a Neurology Associates. On April 6, Dr. Monica Parker from Emory University will speak at a Docs & Desserts program in Cartersvil­le. The final event will be held on May 18 at Mercy Care in Rome. Dr. Larry Tune, a geriatric psychiatri­st with Emory Healthcare, will speak at this program. Refreshmen­ts will be served. There is not a cost for the programs, but registrati­on is required. The Share America Foundation will Christian music stars the Watkins Family and Channing Eleton on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ringgold Depot, corner of Depot Street and U.S. 41 in Ringgold. Randall Franks from TV’s “In the Heat of the Night” will emcee. The event is a fundraiser for the Pearl and Floyd Franks Scholarshi­p Fund helping musicians achieve higher education. AARP Smart Driver- the new and enhanced driving refresher course from AARP Driver Safety will be offered at the Victory Fellowship Center Church located at 925 Oothcaloog­a Street in Calhoun. The class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017 and will be taught by certified volunteer instructor Sheila Powell. Participan­ts are encouraged to check with their insurance agent to see if they are eligible for an insurance discount. There are no tests required to pass the course. The course is open to drivers of all ages and costs $15 for AARP members and $20 for non members, payment can be made by cash or check. Please bring your AARP membership card.
