The Sons of the American Legion will be hosting the Ninth annual 1SG John D. Blair Memorial Golf Tournament Friday, Sept. 1, 2017 at the Calhoun Elks Golf and Country Club. All proceeds raised from this annual event go toward the aid of Veterans and needy families in our community. As a volunteer based nonprofit organization, the American Legion rely on donations from members of the community to achieve goals to fund programs including the aid of veterans, but also, children and youth projects such as The Child Welfare Foundation and Special Olympics. An Auction and awards banquet will be held at our post following the tournament to recognize sponsors and team winners. The Alzheimer’s Association will host a Caregiver Workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, at the Gilmer Senior Center in Ellijay, located at 111 North Gilmer Street. Those in attendance will have the opportunity to learn from Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Susan Greene. Susan will present The Basics – Memory Loss, Dementia, and Alzheimer’s Disease. United Way of Gordon County’s Young Leaders Society provides opportunities for philanthropic service, social, and networking events. Our Lunch with Leaders program provides members with a positive learning experience while allowing members to interact with professional leaders in the community. The mission of the United Way of Gordon County Young Leaders Society is to foster opportunities for volunteerism, philanthropy, and a spirit of caring throughout the communities in which we live and work with one or more of the 19 partner agencies of United Way of Gordon County. Membership Requirements include anyone between the ages of 21-45; dues of $240 annually and 20 volunteer hours performed annually. TALLATOONA BEGINS LIHEAP HEATING ASSISTANCE. Nov. 1 is the date Tallatoona will begin accepting appointments for the heating assistance program. Schedule an appointment online at www.tallatoonacap.org and click on Book Now, or by calling 770-773-7730. The following documents will be needed for appointments: drivers license or state issued photo ID; original social security cards for everyone living in household; proof of citizenship or immigration status such as driver’s license, US military ID, US passport, state issued photo I, US permanent resident card, alien registration card, employment authorization document, certificate of citizenship; most current heating bill within the past 30 days; if your home is heated with natural gas, kerosene, propane or wood you MUST bring both your heating bill and electric bill to the appointment; proof of income for the last 30 days for everyone 18 years or older living in the home including alimony, child support, disability, pension, rental income, retirement, social security, unemployment, wages from work, wages from self employment and workers compensation.
