Calhoun City Schools holds back to school assembly

was once again named Outstandin­g Charter System of the Year and has increased the graduation rate to 97 percent. CCS has earned 18 state championsh­ip titles since 2007. The past decade has seen great success in academics, arts and athletics.

Board chair, Eddie Reeves, also recognized the accomplish­ments of Calhoun City’s Board of Education. Named as one of the top Boards in the state as an Exemplary Board, CCS Board members stand out as leaders in the schools, community and in the state. Vice chair Rhoda Washington, secretary Tony Swink, David Scoggins and Alvin Long all have impressive resumes and have years of dedicated service on local Boards and organizati­ons.

PreK coordinato­r Kelly Fuquea, K-5 complex principal Beth Holcomb and 6-12 campus principal Peter Coombe welcomed their staffs and School Governance Team members in attendance.

New staff members were inducted with “a walk down the red carpet” to start the event. Teachers and staff were nominated for Oscar Awards in several categories with Masters of Ceremonies Hayley Gilreath and Donny Robertson entertaini­ng the group throughout the morning.

More than 50 door prizes were shared from local businesses and Partners in Education: 365 on Piedmont, Appleshine Car Wash, AP Toothpaste - Patti Gilmer, Astro Turf, BaxterDean, Big John’s Treat Shoppe, Bloom, Cotton and Twine, Country Friends, Dairy Queen, Dub’s, Evans Design Works - Casey Evans, Gem Theatre, Gift of Seasons, Healthy Stop Salad Shop, It Works! Lindsey Baxter, Madison Baker Designs, Mary Kay Cosmetics - Charlene Erwin, Plexus - Crystal Davis, Pokey’s Sports, Rusty Zipper, Samantha Lusk Realty, Southern Prep - Amy Scoggins, Thirty One - Julie Morgan, Tundra’s Hair Salon, Seller’s Gourmet, Wall Street Catering, Yellow Jacket Nest School Store. CCS appreciate­s these partners and their generous support.

All staff members left the event with SWAG bags filled with special treats. “We are proud of the work that our employees do each and every day to meet the needs of our students and this is a way for us to show our appreciati­on,” stated Superinten­dent Dr. Michele Taylor. “We are setting the stage for success and it’s showtime!”

Calhoun City Schools’ first day for students will be Monday, Aug. 7.
