Boy Scouts participate in National Scout Jamboree

- Staff Reports

Five Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 22 and Venturing Crew 22, sponsored by Calhoun First United Methodist Church, traveled to Summit- Bechtel National Scout Reserve in West Virginia for 10 days of camping, adventure, and fellowship with 40,000 other Scouts as part of the 2017 National Scout Jamboree sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. The National Jamboree, begun in 1937, is held every four years.

During the Jamboree, Scouts experience diverse programs ranging from Zip lining to Skateboarding ( in one of the world’s largest skateboard parks) and from Virtual Reality to Crossbows. Every 4 years, Scouts from around the United States and from many other countries gather to have the experience of a lifetime as they engage in varied high- adventure activities on over 14,000 acres in the West Virginia mountains.

Eagle Scout Scott Beutel, Life Scouts Caleb Babb and Patrick Gilreath, Star Scout Zack McDougle, and First Class Scout Jace Layson, local Scouts who are all members of both Troop 22 and Crew 22 attended as members of the Northwest Georgia contingent. The Scouts hiked around 75 miles while at the event ( since the Scouts walk everywhere they go.)

The Boy Scouting Program is for boys aged 11 through 17 years old. Venturing is a coeducational, high adventure program of the Boy Scouts for youth 14- 21 years old. Scouts work at their own pace through service, adventure, learning, leadership and stewardship.
