The Calhoun Housing Authority Board of Commission­ers meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month for the regular called Board Meetings at 12: 00 p. m. Special Board meetings will be advertised in advance. All meetings are held at 607 Oothcaloog­a St. Calhoun, Georgia. The public is invited to attend. Call to verify a meeting is schedule prior to attending.

The Calhoun Area Writers meet every third Friday of the month at The Harris Arts Center from 6- 7: 30 p. m. The club exists to support writers, from published authors to those who simply enjoy writing down their thoughts.

The Board of Trustees of the CalhounGor­don County Public Library, Calhoun, Georgia, will hold its regular quarterly meeting Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, at 4: 30 p. m. at the Calhoun-Gordon County Public Library, located at 100 North Park Avenue Calhoun, GA 30701. This meeting is open to the public. This regularly scheduled meeting of the board of trustees will consider agenda items, actions and review proposed amendments and or updates to the constituti­on and bylaws of the public library. Proposed changes to the constituti­on and bylaws must be presented to the library board of trustees for review at least 2- weeks prior to the meeting date.

Virtual Dementia Tour at Calhoun Healthcare Center, located at 1387 US 41 North in Calhoun, on Wednesday, Aug. 9 from 1 -5 p. m. The Virtual Dementia Tour uses patented sensory tools and instructio­n based on research conducted by a specialist in geriatrics. During a Virtual Dementia Tour experience, trained facilitato­rs guide participan­ts outfitted with patented devices that alter their senses while they try to complete common everyday tasks and exercises. It enables caregivers to experience for themselves the physical and mental challenges faced by those with dementia and use the experience to provide better person- centered care. The Gordon County Historical Society will have its quarterly meeting on Thursday, Aug. 17 at the Historic Depot in downtown Calhoun. A covered dish meal will precede the meeting at 6: 30 p. m.; feel free to bring your favorite covered dish. Jeff Henderson will be the keynote speaker, covering the people, communitie­s and rivers of Gordon County. Everyone is invited to attend.

The August Young Farmer meeting will be held at the livestock pavilion on the Highway 53 Spur on Thursday, Aug. 17. Dinner at 6: 30 p. m. with the program beginning at 7 p. m. The program is geared toward anyone involved in or having an interest in livestock showing. The speaker will be Tim Street, Gordon County 4-H Program Assistant & Livestock Coordinato­r. Tim will speak from the viewpoint of a livestock show judge- giving insight on livestock showing from his experience as a judge.

The Sons of the American Legion will be hosting the Ninth annual 1SG John D. Blair Memorial Golf Tournament Friday, Sept. 1, 2017 at the Calhoun Elks Golf and Country Club. All proceeds raised from this annual event go toward the aid of Veterans and needy families in our community. As a volunteer based nonprofit organizati­on, the American Legion rely on donations from members of the community to achieve goals to fund programs including the aid of veterans, but also, children and youth projects such as The Child Welfare Foundation and Special Olympics. An Auction and awards banquet will be held at our post following the tournament to recognize sponsors and team winners. The Alzheimer’s Associatio­n will host a Caregiver Workshop from 11 a. m. to 1 p. m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, at the Gilmer Senior Center in Ellijay, located at 111 North Gilmer Street. Those in attendance will have the opportunit­y to learn from Geriatric Nurse Practition­er Susan Greene. Susan will present The Basics – Memory Loss, Dementia, and Alzheimer’s Disease. The Workshop provides caregivers of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias an opportunit­y to interact with other family caregivers and to ask questions of Susan. United Way of Gordon County’s Young Leaders Society provides opportunit­ies for philanthro­pic service, social, and networking events. Our Lunch with Leaders program provides members with a positive learning experience while allowing members to interact with profession­al leaders in the community. The mission of the United Way of Gordon County Young Leaders Society is to foster opportunit­ies for volunteeri­sm, philanthro­py, and a spirit of caring throughout the communitie­s in which we live and work with one or more of the 19 partner agencies of United Way of Gordon County. Membership Requiremen­ts include anyone between the ages of 21- 45; dues of $ 240 annually and 20 volunteer hours performed annually.
