Calhoun has success in scrimmage

Lady Jackets show promise at home against Rockmart

- By Alex Farrer

The Calhoun Lady Jackets got their one and only dress rehearsal in on Thursday before the regular season starts this coming week, and they made the most of it despite a depleted roster.

Calhoun hosted perennial playoff contender Rockmart on Thursday as both teams continued gearing up for the season ahead, and while there was no official score kept as both coaches used the scrimmage as a chance to get everyone playing time in hopes of evaluating their skills, the host Lady Jackets pulled out a 5-3 victory.

Calhoun coach Diane Smith, who was competing without several players due to them playing in national tournaments with their travel teams, said she was pleased overall with what she saw from her team but there is always room to grow.

“As a coach, you don’t really like playing scrimmages without everyone here, but we had 12 here today and they all played and batted,” said Smith. “All five of our pitchers that were here today got to pitch. We had a few girls that struggled at the plate a little, but many of those will be JV players for us this year once we have our full team together.

“We did okay today. I think we still have a lot to improve on, but getting a 5-3 win over a team like Rockmart is a good thing.”

Torri Gaddis, Kayla Watson, Molly Walker, Blair Hall and Lona Sims all saw time in the circle pitching. Hall came back in to the game in the seventh inning to close things out after Rockmart had cut the deficit to just two after trailing by four going into the frame. She stopped them right there, however, to wrap up the scrimmage victory for her team.

Walker had two RBIs at the plate, both coming on sacrifice flies. Hall, Sims and Elizabeth Peyton also had hits and RBIs, and returning starters Carlie Henderson and Erin Barnes each had multiple hits.
