Portivent appointed attorney of Gordon County Schools

- Staff Reports

Gordon County Schools has appointed Elinor Portivent as the system’s attorney, replacing longtime attorney Jim Ledbetter who resigned earlier this fall.

Ledbetter announced this fall that he would resign from the position at the end of the year. “Having taken on the responsibilities as County Administrator, I find myself with a difficult decision,” said Ledbetter. “I have loved my work with the Gordon County Board over the last seventeen years, but I feel it is time to pass the reigns.”

At the Board of Education meeting held on Dec. 11, 2017, Ledbetter made a recommendation for his replacement. Following his recommendation, Elinor Portivent, an attorney from the Calhoun area, was unanimously approved to fill the role.

“We are thrilled to have Elinor representing our Board,” said Superintendent Dr. Susan Remillard. “We have spent some time in discussion with her regarding our vision and mission for the district, and we feel as though she will be a great fit. While we will miss having Jim as our Board attorney, we feel like the transition to his new role will only strengthen our partnership with Gordon County.”

Portivent received her undergraduate degree from The University of Georgia in 2002 and Juris Doctor from Stetson University College of Law in 2006. Upon graduation, she worked as the Judicial Law Clerk of the Judges of the Cherokee Judicial Circuit, primarily in Gordon County, for two years. Most recently, she currently serves as Solicitor for the Probate Court of Gordon County and Solicitor for the Magistrate Court of Gordon County.

In addition to her years in the public sector, Portivent went into private practice as an associate in The Law Offices of Scott J. Forster from 2008 until September of 2014, when she opened her own practice, Elinor H. Portivent, P.C.

When asked about her new role as Board attorney, Portivent replied, “I am humbled by the opportunity and very much looking forward to working with the Board and Dr. Remillard.”
