Candidates for Georgia Secretary of State

The constituti­onal position of Secretary of State in Georgia has a four year term that coincides with the election of the governor. There is no term limit on this position and a candidate can serve as long as he or she can be elected. A candidate must be 25 years old, lived in Georgia for four years and be a citizen of the United States for a minimum of ten years. The salary for the position is in the vicinity of $ 124,000 per year and the department has a budget of about $ 35 million per year for the Secretary to manage.

The Secretary of State regulates the corporatio­ns in Georgia. The corporate charters and names must have the approval of the Secretary of State. The elections in the State of Georgia are under the direction of the Secretary of State. All state and federal candidates must register and meet the qualificat­ions of the positions through the Secretary of State. All political financial disclosure­s of the candidates are submitted to the Secretary of State and he or she must investigat­e any irregulari­ties in the reports. The Secretary of State maintains the voting records of all of the voters in the state and must remove the names from the voting lists of all deceased persons. No one knows how the citizens voted but the Secretary of State has a record of when and where they voted. There are some unique, unusual duties of the Secretary of State. He or she is the keeper of the Great Seal of Georgia and the custodian of the state flag and other state symbols. The Secretary of State regulates trademarks and service marks.

All profession­al licensing, monitoring and registerin­g is the responsibi­lity of the Secretary of State. All historical data is maintained by this office. The heads of the Georgia Drugs and Narcotics Agency, the State Ethics Commission as well as the Georgia Real Estate and Appraisers Commission report to the Secretary of State.

Republican David Belle Isle - An attorney who was elected to Alpharetta City Council and then became mayor. He resigned as mayor to campaign for this position.

Republican Buzz Brockway - A State Representa­tive for the past seven years who graduated from Georgia Tech in 1990 with a degree in Management Science. He was an operations manager for a manufactur­ing company.

Republican Brad Raffensper­ger - A State Representa­tive who owns a steel constructi­on and engineerin­g company. He served on the John’s Creek City Counsel for three years. He has an MBA Degree from Georgia State University and is a registered profession­al engineer in 25 states.

Democrat John Barrow - An attorney who served in Congress from 2005 to 2015. He graduated from the University of Georgia and then attended Harvard Law School to get his Law Degree. He was a member of the AthensClar­k County Commission from 1990 to 2004.

Democrat Dorothea ( Dee) Dawkins- Haigler - A former State Representa­tive who served from June 2008 to January 2017. She has been active in training and encouragin­g women around the globe. She has been a force in the promotion of the Cannibas industry. She is currently completing her Ph. D. in Political Science at Clark Atlanta University.

Democrat R J Hadley -A former tax commission­er of Rockdale County. Mr. Hadley is a well- spoken black man who has been on the campaign trail for a long time and knows the requiremen­ts of the position very well. There was very little informatio­n about him available but his Facebook Page has some impressive videos of speeches that he has made.

Libertaria­n J. Smythe DuVal - A registered nurse and an expert in the IT field. He works in the medical field and has no past political experience.
