On March 21, 2018, more than 650 high school Work- Based Learning students from five local school districts, Calhoun, Dalton, Murray, Gordon, and Whitfield came together for A “Rising Professionals Seminar” at the Dalton Convention Center. Of the 650 students, 50 were Calhoun High School Work- Based Learning participants.
Work-Based Learning placements are structured experiences that connect students’ career goals and previous classroom learning with productive work environments. The students participate in WBL in lieu of other courses and are placed in jobs and internships throughout the community. WBL opportunities provide students with a range of experiences that are designed to connect classroom knowledge with real- world experiences in order to prepare them for postsecondary and career opportunities.
Rising Professionals is a unique partnership between the schools and local industry allowing students to attend breakout sessions covering a variety of employability and life skills. Some of the topics addressed included: money management and credit, job acquisition and advancement, communication and social media in the workplace, and team building experiences. This year’s Rising Professionals seminar sessions were led by industry professionals from Shaw Industries, Mohawk Industries, Engineered Floors, Reynolds Farm, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and Browne, Draper & Land.
Dr. Brandi Hayes, Calhoun’s Director of College and Career Programs said, “The Rising Professionals event covers many of the employability skills that are so critical in today’s workplace. Our goal is to give these students, who are already working, an opportunity to hear from industry leaders about the skills and abilities that business and industry have targeted as areas of need for current and future employees.”
