Jackets, Lady Jackets sweep region warm-up meet at home

The Calhoun girls and boys track teams got a preview of what’s to come at the Region 6-AAA Meet next week, and they had to come away encouraged by the results.

Calhoun hosted six schools, several from 6-AAA, on Thursday in a warm-up for the region meet and swept the girls and boys team standings. The Lady Jackets finished with 132.5 points to take first ahead of Coosa (128.5) and Bremen (116.5), and the Calhoun boys racked up 138.5 points to narrowly edge out Bremen (137) and Coosa (103).

On the girls side, Calhoun was led by Erin Davis who won the 100 meter dash with a 13.65 and Makail Lawrence who won the discus with a 90-10. Finishing in the top three in their events were Davis in the 200 meter dash (third, 29.68) and triple jump (31-09.50), Lawrence in the shot put (second, 30-00.25), Ashley Jaramillo in the 800 meter (third, 2:54.84), Emily Driscoll in the 3200 meter (third, 13:36.49), Erin Barnes in the 300 meter hurdles (third, 51.92) and pole vault (second, 6-06), Nena Marcus in the long jump (second, 14-10), Rebekah Ridley in the triple jump (third, 31-03), Reece Duke in the discus (third, 87-02) and the 4x400 meter relay ‘A’ team (third, 5:00.87). They had 12 other top-eight finishes to earn points for the team.

For the Calhoun boys, first-place finishes came from Brody Blalock in the 800 meter (2:08.46), Felipe Barrios in the 3200 meter (10:59.75), the 4x400 meter relay ‘A’ team (3:42.96) and CJ Fuller in the shot put (4801). Jackets with top three finishes were Blaylock in the pole vault ( second, 8-00), Drew Rutledge in the 400 meter dash (second, 53.78) and the discus (second, 132-09), Ben Tow in the 800 meter (second, 2:10.05), Greg Carr in the 300 meter hurdles (second, 43.98), Bryan Landis in the pole vault (third, J8-00), Tono Martha in the long jump (third, 19-00.5), Jonkell Tolbert in the triple jump (third, 40-08.5) and Cole Griffin in the shot put (third, 43-07). The Jackets had 11 other top-eight finishes.

Calhoun hosted the first day of the Region 6-AAA Meet on Tuesday and will host the second and final day of the meet on Wednesday.

In other recent prep sports action:

The Gordon Central girls and boys hosted quad meet on Thursday and had good results as they tune up for the Region 7-AA Meet this week.

The Warriors finished first in the team standings with an impressive 119 total points ahead of Cartersvil­le (58), Ringgold (42) and Model (27). The Lady Warriors took second as a team with 77 points behind first-place Cartersvil­le (78) and in front of Ringgold (66) and Model (20).

Leading the way for the Gordon Central boys was Morgan Swaim with a big day, including firstplace finishes in the triple jump (41-00), 400 meter dash (51.23) and 800 meter (2:13.92). Also taking first for the Warriors was Luke Beavers in the high jump (5-10), Fredy Berganza in the shot put (43-00), Toby Whitt in the discus (113-07.5), Nelson Rodriguez in the 3200 meter (11:26.75), Cameron Padgett in the 100 meter dash (11.46), Donovan Massingill in the 200 meter dash (23.61) and the 4x400 meter relay ‘A’ team (3:41.88). They had 13 other top-three finishes.

On the girls’ side, Gordon Central was led by first-place finishes from Cassie Chastain in the high jump (J4-08), Cora Stepp in the 1600 meter (J6:20.32) and Brooklyn Towe in the 300 meter hurdles (56.34). The Lady Warriors had 15 other top-three finishes.

Gordon Central hosted the first day of the Region 7-AA Meet on Tuesday and will host the final day on Thursday starting at 3 p.m.

The Jackets built an early lead and never looked back on Thursday in a region road win.

Calhoun (16-8, 9-5 in 6-AAA) jumped on top with six runs in the first and then added one in the second, five in the third and three in the fifth. The Jackets’ lineup racked up 13 hits and benefited from eight North Murray errors.

Leading the way at the plate for Calhoun was Ben King with two hits and two RBIs and Brett Potts with two hits, an RBI and three runs scored. Parker Lester added a hit and two RBIs, and Aaron Hayes, Parker McPherson, Carson Kemp and Mathew Williams all had a hit and an RBI apiece. Brady Drummond drove in a run, Davis Allen contribute­d a hit and three runs scored and Jeremy Register had a hit and a run scored. Ethan Crump and Riley Harwell each had a hit apiece as well, and Payton Morrow and Joshua Tolson scored two runs apiece.

King earned the win on the mound with a shortened completega­me effort. He went five innings and allowed one run ( unearned) on six hits while striking out seven.

The Jackets were on the road at Coahulla Creek on Tuesday. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They will be back home on Thursday to host rival Adairsvill­e at 5:55 p.m.

Sonoravill­e hung in until the middle innings but a big surge from host LFO sent the Phoenix to a lopsided region loss on Friday.

The Phoenix (9-13, 5-10 in 6-AAA) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third, but LFO went on to score 10 runs over the final four innings, including a five-run fourth. Storm Carnes had a 3-for-3 day with a double and an RBI at the plate for Sonoravill­e, and Gavin Phillips also had a hit. Tyler Lyles drew two walks and Chase Kirby scored a run.

Sonoravill­e was back at home on Tuesday to host Ringgold. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They will be on the road at North Murray on Thursday at 5:55 p.m. A hole-in-one by Matthew Bryson was the shining moment in Gordon Central’s team victory in a four-team match at Meadow Lakes on Thursday.

Bryson’s hole-in-one came during a round of 42 that was the Warriors’ second lowest score on the day as they shot a 169 as a team to finish first by a wide margin in front of Coosa (183), Model (198) and Pepperell (206). Jordan Hardin was the low man for Gordon Central with a 40, and Josh Hardin (43) and Zeb Reddix (44) also contribute­d to the team score. Isaac McEntyre (45) and Alex Neal (61) also completed rounds.

The Warriors were back home at Fields Ferry on Tuesday to host Chattooga and Rockmart for a three-team match. (For details on that match, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They will compete in the Nob North 18-hole tournament on Thursday.

The Calhoun girls earned a win on Thursday in a tri-match against Sonoravill­e and Cartersvil­le at Fields Ferry, and the Calhoun boys finished second in a tight match.

The Lady Jackets shot a 145 to take first ahead of Sonoravill­e (154) and Cartersvil­le (175). Calhoun was led by Katie Kauffman and Kylee Thornton who each shot a 43, and Andie Robinson carded a 59.

The Sonoravill­e girls were led by Clara Hulsey, who finished as low medalist on the day with a 39. Jenna Palazzolo (56) and Brooke Jones (59) rounded out the team score. Rachel Smith also shot a 62.

The Calhoun boys finished three strokes back of Cartersvil­le as the Jackets shot a 159. Sonoravill­e took third with a 167. Leading Calhoun was Avery Dodd with a 37. Drew Gravitt (39), Andrew Barber (41) and Hayden Hayes (42) completed the team score. Taylor Gresham and Will Holden also completed rounds, each shooting a 46.

The Phoenix got their low score from Paxton Jarrett with a 39. Blake Rouzee (41), Ryan Redd (43) and Tucker Murray (44) completed the team score. Also completing rounds for Sonoravill­e was Christian Balistreri (44), Lane Worley (47), Cody Grantham (47) and Destin Summers (48).

Sonoravill­e visited Barnsley Gardens to take on Adairsvill­e on Tuesday. (For details on that match, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) Calhoun, Sonoravill­e and North Murray will play a tri-match on Thursday at Fields Ferry starting at 4 p.m.
