Victory Fellowship Center will host its annual school supply giveaway on Saturday, July 14 from 9 - 11 a.m. (while supplies last). The church is located at 925 Oothcaloog­a Street, Calhoun. A fun time coming on Saturday, July 14 at the Oostanaula School Community Club, located at 1595 Oostanaula Bend Road in Calhoun. Home cooked meal served at 5 p.m. for $7 includes a drink and dessert. Preserving the Taste of Summer: A Peach Jam Making Workshop will be held on Thursday, July 19 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Sonoravill­e High School Room 214. The Christmas in July Elves will hold a Quarter Clothing Sale on Monday, July 23, 2018 at Calhoun First Baptist Church’s Christian Life Center. The elves will sell all items available (gently used clothing, used shoes, accessorie­s and books) for only a quarter each. Please come by and shop from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tell your friends.

The only outdoors vendor trade show in Atlanta returns to Duluth’s Infinite Energy Center on July 27-29. The 11th annual GON Outdoor Blast, presented by Georgia’s Best Chevy Dealers, is the hunting show for sportsman. The Outdoor Blast has something for everyone with an interest in outdoor recreation. The GON Truck-Buck Shoot-Out and State Duck Calling competitio­n are held during the expo. Attendees can shop hundreds of businesses from across the Southeast, and dozens are offering special Blast Bargains, with prices up to 75 percent off retail. On Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., educators will explore the topic of teaching writing with local writer and educator, Martha Templeton at the Calhoun-Gordon County Library. In Ms. Templeton’s session, “Students as Authors: Empowering Students with Words, with Audience, and with Voice,” educators will explore the merits of an authentic writers’ workshop as an avenue for student access to language. Teachers will engage in model lessons, discuss the merits of giving students choice in writing, examine student work, discuss the use of assessment tools to guide and assess the work, and explore the power of individual and group conference­s in facilitati­ng student growth. These sessions (and GATESOL membership) are good for any teacher who has English learners in their classrooms! Classroom teachers are invited to join GATESOL and register for the sessions.
