Celebrate Recovery comes to Calhoun

- By Alexis Draut ADraut@CalhounTimes.com

The Biblically-based nonprofit organization will begin to host meetings in Calhoun for those who need support during recovery.

A team of 17 leaders from Calhoun has been in training for the past several months in preparation for bringing a new social gathering to the area. The ministry leader of the group, Kim Knight, is proud to announce that a branch of Celebrate Recovery is coming to Gordon County, and is welcoming anyone who wants to come.

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered, 12 step recovery program for anyone strug- gling with hurt, pain or addiction of any kind. It started in 1991 at a California church, according to the organization’s website, and over the past 18 years, the nonprofit has expanded to an international status. Celebrate Recovery is now present in over 35,000 churches and has helped over 5 million people in their processes of recovery.

Knight knows that most people think the organization is only for addicts, but she said it’s actually for everyone.

“Celebrate Recovery deals with anyone who has a hurt, habit or hang-up, whether it’s grief, depression or bitterness,” Knight said. “It’s a safe place where people can come and experience confidentiality and anonymity.”

Knight is a member of the City of Refuge church in Calhoun, the same church which is sponsoring the new Celebrate Recovery branch, and she said she’s been impacted by Celebrate Recovery groups in other churches.

“I knew we didn’t have anything like this in Calhoun, and I started talking to other people, and everybody said we needed to bring it here,” Knight said, refusing to take the credit for initiating the start of this Calhoun group.

Knight said there are a group of people who are involved in this group, including her pastor Tim Langston and other members of her church. Yet, she said there are also five other churches represented in the leadership team, and that a lot of leaders are actually people who have gone through Celebrate Recovery themselves.

Knight wants everyone to know that these meetings are not exclusive, but that everybody is invited to come.

“My trainer’s philosophy is that everyone who has a belly button should be in Celebrate Recovery,” Knight said. “I agree because it has done wonders for me personally. We’ve seen marriages restored, we’ve seen people leave terrible situations. It truly gets to the root of the problem.”

Starting Tuesday, the Calhoun Celebrate Recovery will have meetings every Tuesday night from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Dinner and childcare will be provided, and the group will meet at the Boys & Girls Club, located at 10001 S. Wall St. Chris McDaniel will be the opening guest speaker, presenting his testimony and leading worship.

Knight said they are currently looking for volunteers to help cook, set up and tear down after meetings on Tuesday nights. For more information contact Kim Knight at 678-986-5904, the City of Refuge church at 706-659-7622 or visit their Facebook page “Celebrate Recovery – Calhoun.”
