Firebirds keep rolling with another win, Calhoun secures second-place finish
Sonoraville picked up a commanding victory at the South Paulding Duals, while Calhoun earned second at the Murray County Invitational.
Ahead of this weekend’s Area 4-AAA Duals, the Sonoraville Firebirds easily coasted past the competition at the South Paulding Duals, collecting another win and moving its record to a clean 26-0 on the season.
The Firebirds kicked off the action by soundly defeating Kennesaw Mountain 74-6. The team then went on to defeat OLA 54-18 before vanquishing Cedartown 84-0, dominating Northwest Whitfield 53-15 and finally knocking off South Paulding 54-15.
Going undefeated across the duals for Sonoraville was Hector Arbos (106), Eli Knight (126), Rowan Burdick (132), Jayce Derryberry (145), Trevor Burdick (152), Davin O’Neal (160), Bailey Hughes (195) John Knight (285), Brandon Bristol (285) and Jaxx Knight (285).
The Calhoun wrestling squad also took to the mats over the weekend, securing an impressive secondplace finish at the Murray County Invitational.
Calhoun was led by Dawson Hamby, who notched a first-place finish, Chandler Hamby and Sexton Golden, who added second-place finishes, Armando Monroy and Haydin Harris, who earned third-place finishes, and Jonathan Santana and Owen Mendez, who chipped in fourth-place finishes.
Both teams will now turn their attention to the Area Duals this Saturday, Jan. 12, which Sonoraville is slated to host. Action will take place on two mats in the high school gym, and two additional mats in the old middle school gym. The top-2 teams will advance to the State Duals on January 17-19 in Macon.
