Calhoun girls and boys dropped Region 6-AAA away contests on Friday.

In what was at least initially a tightly-contested, back-and-forth duel between a pair of the most complete teams near the top of the Region 6-AAA standings, the North Murray Mountaineers pulled away in the second half and bested the Calhoun Yellow Jackets 71-53 on Friday.

The Jackets (7-7, 5-4 in Region 6-AAA) got off to a solid start in the road contest, earning a hard-fought one-point advantage after one quarter of play in which it scored 18 points. However, the Mountaineers quickly snatched the lead heading into the break with a 20-point second quarter.

North Murray would hold on to the momentum from that point forward, submitting a 16-point third quarter and 18-point fourth quarter while never relinquishing the lead. The Mountaineers clamped down and held the Jackets to just eight points in the final period.

On the stat sheet, Calhoun was lead by Gage Maffetone, who accumulated a teamhigh 25 points and seven rebounds. Also pitching in was Davis Allen with nine points, Xaxton Goodson with eight points, Tonocito Martha with five points and Cedric Lacey with four points.

Calhoun will host Murray County at home on Tuesday, Jan. 8. For coverage of that contest, pick up a copy of Saturday’s Calhoun Times.

The Calhoun girls also struggled to generate enough offense to keep pace with the North Murray girls in earlier action, dropping its contest 74-45.

The Lady Jackets (1-8, 2-10 in Region 6-AAA) kept the game close, trailing by only four after the first quarter and ten at the half. However, the Lady Mountaineers took complete control in the third quarter, outscoring Calhoun 23-6 over those eight minutes.

Lyndi Rae Davis led the Lady Jackets in the scoring column with 13. Also chipping in to the offensive efforts was Malysha Winston, who finished with eight points, Railey Greeson, who finished with seven points and Erin Barnes and Ashlyn Brzozoski, who finished with five points apiece.
