Alabama extends Saban through ’28

-

Alabama extended Nick Saban’s contract through 2028 on Monday, a deal the coach said would keep him there for the rest of his career.

The new agreement extended Saban’s current deal by three seasons and runs through Feb. 28, 2029.

His base salary of $8.425 million for the current contract year will increase annually throughout the length of the deal.

Saban will also receive an $800,000 contract completion benefit at the end of the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 seasons, putting his total annual compensation in the $10 million range.

Saban, who turns 70 in October, is entering his 15th season at Alabama and has guided the Crimson Tide to six national championships, seven SEC championships and a 170-23 (.881) record. Alabama went 13-0 and defeated Ohio State in the College Football Playoff national title game last season.

“Terry and I are pleased and happy to sign another contract extension that will keep us in Tuscaloosa through the end of our career,” Saban said in a statement released by the school. “Our family calls Tuscaloosa and the state of Alabama home, it’s a place where our roots now run deep. This agreement gives us the chance to continue to impact the lives of the young men and their families who choose to play football and get an education at Alabama.”

Alabama has been ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 for at least one week for 13 straight years, breaking the previous record of seven years set by Miami from 1986-92.

Saban coached the Miami Dolphins (2005-06) and at LSU (2000-04) and Michigan State (1995-99) before taking the position at Alabama in 2007.
