Free agent cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested on a domestic violence charge in Redmond, Washington, early Wednesday morning.

Per public records, Sherman was booked at 6:08 a.m. local time for “burglary domestic violence” at King County Correctional Facility in Seattle. The case is being investigated as a felony.

The records denote that Sherman was denied bail, however a spokesman for the Redmond Police Department told ESPN that is standard procedure for suspects in a domestic violence incident until they appear before a judge.

The spokesman would not confirm the name of the person taken into custody, but The Seattle Times said a woman identified as Sherman’s wife confirmed he was in jail.

“At this time we’re going to make no statements, except he didn’t harm anybody,” said Ashley Moss, described by The Times as “emotionally shaken.” She declined to provide details of just what happened before Sherman’s arrest.

“My kids were not harmed in the incident. He’s a good person and this is not his character,” Moss said. “We’re doing all right, just trying to get him out. I want people to know no one was injured.”

Also, Washington State Police are investigating Sherman in connection to a single-car accident and damage to state Department of Transportation property that occurred at approximately 1 a.m. PT. The car, which is registered to Sherman, struck a concrete barrier and was abandoned in a nearby parking lot.

That investigation is ongoing. He has yet to be charged in relation to the car accident.

Per the spokesman for the Redmond Police Department, a 911 call from the residence was received at 2 a.m. PT. The person making the call said an adult male family member who did not live at the residence was attempting to force his way into the home.

The suspect was located outside the home when police arrived. He initially fought with police to the point that a K9 dog was deployed to help bring him into custody, TMZ Sports reported. The suspect was taken to a local hospital before later booked into the correctional facility.

The NFL Players Association released the following statement on Wednesday without mentioning the player’s name:

“We were made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved.”

We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us.”

Sherman is a vice president on the NFL Player Association’s executive committee.

Sherman, 33, missed a career-high 11 games last season for the San Francisco 49ers. The five-time Pro Bowl selection recorded 18 tackles and one interception in five games before being released in February.
