Gordon Central loses crucial 7-2A game to Model

After not playing last week due to unforeseen circumstances, the Gordon Central basketball team was back on the court Tuesday night and dropped a crucial Region 7-2A contest to Model, 71-46, on the Warriors’ court.

With last week’s contest against Copper Basin called off due to bad weather in the area and last Friday’s Region contest against North Murray halted midway through the first quarter because a fight broke out, the Warriors were playing their first game in almost two weeks and just their second game in the past 23 days.

The game ended the first half of the Region schedule for the Warriors, who will begin the second part of their league agenda back at home next Tuesday night when they host Rockmart.

From the start Tuesday night, the Warriors struggled at the offensive end. They were missing a few key players because of what happened last Friday night and weren’t able to use their depth against the Blue Devils because they filled in the roster with several junior varsity players.

Thanks to a pair of three-point shots, the visitors were able to grab a 13-9 lead at the end of the first period. Five different players scored Gordon Central’s points with four cagers making a basket while another added a foul shot.

Model began to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring the Warriors, 19-7, to take a 3216 upper hand at halftime.

Gordon Central made just two baskets in the second, along with three foul shots.

Model senior forward Jakeness Heard led the Blue Devils’ 19-point quarter with eight points himself on four made baskets and his twin brother Jeremiah Heard had five more, including a three, giving those guys 13 of their team’s 19 points.

They would add to that lead in the third quarter, outdualing the Warriors, 16-9, for a 48-25 lead to start the final eight minutes.

Senior guard Mac McDaniel was the only Gordon Central player in double digits with 14 points and fellow senior backcourt mate Blake Broome finished
