County Summer Camps holding registration

-

Registration is currently underway for the upcoming summer sports camps for young students in the Gordon County Schools.

The camps, hosted by both Gordon Central and Sonoraville High Schools, will run virtually throughout the summer.

In all, a dozen different camps will be held with five of those coming the first full week after school officially closes for the summer.

The first camp is the Phoenix Tennis camp, which will be directed by Sonoraville High head coach Becki Hall. It runs for two days on Thursday, May 25 and Friday, May 26 and is for young players in grades one through eight.

The cost is $40 per camper and the sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. both days.

The Warrior basketball, Camp Supertwirl, Lady Phoenix softball, S.T.E.A.M. and Gordon Central High School Performing Arts learning sessions will all begin on Tuesday, May 30, the day after Memorial Day.

And all will run until Thursday, June 1 to end the week except for the Performing Arts Center, which completes its camp on Friday, June 2.

The Warrior basketball camp will be held at Gordon Central High School by Warrior head coaches Wes Greer and Maci Mills and is for boys and girls ages 5-14. It begins each morning in the Warriors’ gym at 9 a.m. and lasts until 12 p.m. noon.

The cost is $75 for one child and $125 for all siblings.

Camp Supertwirl takes place at Red Bud Middle School and will be put on by the Sonoraville High School Majorettes. The class is for all local girls ages 4-and-up and runs for four days.

The cost of Camp Supertwirl is $50 per girl and starts at 9 a.m. each day and lasts until 12 p.m. each day.

The Lady Phoenix softball camp also runs those same three days and is for girls in the county ages five to 14. The camp at GCHS begins at 8:30 a.m. each day and lasts until 12 p.m.

The cost is $50 per child and if there is bad weather the instructions will move indoors.

The S.T.E.A.M. camp also lasts from May 30 through June 1 and the abbreviation stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.

It is for students in the county ages 11-14 and lasts four hours each day, running from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Gordon Central will host the Performing Arts camp that week as well for boys and girls between five and 14 and runs from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

After those camps are complete, there are five more in June with each one lasting three days.

The first two are the Phoenix wrestling camp at the Gordon County Rec Center and the Gordon Central soccer camp at Ratner Stadium and both take place in the same week.

The Phoenix wrestling camp runs from June 13-15 and is for interested youth between the ages of five and 18 and is $30 per camper. All campers between kindergarten and fifth grade are urged to bring a friend to the camp to pair up with.

Sonoraville head coach Randy Steward brings in guest speakers and instructors to talk to the perspective wrestlers and it runs each of its three days from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m with classes in the mornings and time on the mat in the afternoons and a lunch break in between.

The Gordon Central High School soccer camp goes from June 14-16 with boys coach Mederic Rodriguez and girls coach Joani Scott the instructors.

The instructions are from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and in case of rain, the camp will be moved indoors. The cost is $75 for one child and $50 for each additional sibling.

The next week, from June 19 through the 21st, Gordon Central will hold its wrestling camp for interested grapplers between the ages of 11 and 18 and it goes each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The campers will receive instruction throughout the morning, break for lunch, and then get on the mat in the afternoons for more sessions. The cost is $65 for all three days or $25 per day.

The final camp of June will be the Warrior football camp at Gordon Central High School. The camp will be the first since Lenny Gregory became the new head coach of the Warriors in February and is the only one that will be held in the evening.

The three-day camp starts on Monday, June 26 and runs until Wednesday, June 28 and lasts from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day. The instructions are open to all children ages 5 and up in Gordon County.

The camp is $100 per child or $125 for two children, but campers can get a break on the price with early registration as the cost is just $75 for kids who signup before May 18. After that date, the cost is $100.

The final two Gordon County Schools athletic camps are set for late July and both are indoors.

The Phoenix basketball camp takes place Monday, July 17 through Wednesday, July 19th at Sonoraville High School. It is for boys and girls, ages five to 14, and goes each of the three days from 8:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. The cost is $50 per child.

And with the high school volleyball season right around the corner, the final camp of the summer will be the Phoenix volleyball camp back at The Furnace, going from Tuesday, July 25 until Thursday, June 27.

It is for girls ages 9 to 14 and runs two hours each day, starting at 9 a.m. and going until 11 a.m. and is $50 for each camper.
