Gordon County’s Rodney Curtis announces 2023 run for sheriff

- From staff reports

At least one race for a local countywide office is heating up early, as the upcoming bid for Gordon County Sheriff looks to have a challenger.

Gordon County native Rodney Curtis has announced his intention to run for sheriff Thursday afternoon. The office will next be decided as part of the November 2024 ballot.

“Many concerned citizens have approached me about the need for change in leadership at our Sheriff’s Office, and that is why today I am announcing my intent to seek election as your next sheriff of Gordon

County,” Curtis said.

Curtis says his 20 years of law enforcement experience have included many aspects including administration, operations, investigations, and professional standards.

“I still have more to do, more to offer, and more to accomplish,” Curtis said. “My career journey required a lot of faith, perseverance and resilience, and I am grateful for all the lessons and experiences that have prepared me for this opportunity.”

Most recently, Curtis has served as second-in-command as a captain for the Cohutta Police Department in neighboring Whitfield County.

“Gordon County is growing at a rapid pace before our eyes,” Curtis said. “Unfortunately with growth comes more crime. I understand the diverse law enforcement needs across Gordon County because I have been an integral part of them.”

From 2002 to 2008, Curtis worked in various roles at Gordon County Sheriff’s Office, then from 2008 to 2021 he worked as a Georgia State Patrol trooper, before becoming a private investigator with a law firm, and then back to police work in Cohutta.

“My promise to Gordon County is to make our community a safer place to live and raise our families,” Curtis said. “I realize the importance of having the public’s trust and will always honor my commitment to serve the citizens of Gordon County.”

Current Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston was first elected in 2008, and has held the office since Jan. 1, 2009. In his last bid for sheriff in 2020, Ralston ran unopposed, and also had no general election challengers in 2016 or 2012.
