Floyd man charged in fatal Highway 53 wreck Five Steps and an Answer

As Calhoun resident John Swafford’s wife, Janis, was experienci­ng health challenges, yet another challenge faced them as senior citizens: getting her up and down the five steps on either side of their home.

Swafford voiced his concern while talking with Homespun Hospice Chaplain Tim Reed. “We love to be outside in the sunshine and fresh air, but it’s becoming more and more difficult. Getting her to appointmen­ts is another problem.”

In just a few days, volunteer Hospice Chaplain Keith Davis and his wife Sharon knocked on the Swaffords’ door, ready to build and install the wheelchair ramp. Within two weeks the ramp led from the front door to the sidewalk below.“

On Sept. 8 around 7 p.m., Ingram pulled in front of a Suzuki GSX motorcycle traveling north on Ga. 53. The motorcycle struck the front left fender of the Silverado.

The motorcycle driver, 26-year-old Jonathan Dunn, of Rome, was taken to Atrium Health Floyd medical center where he was pronounced dead.
