Warriors hope for playoff push in 7-2A

- From staff reports

The Gordon Central High School basketball team entered the weekend back in Region 7-2A games after a big 56-48 non-league victory over Southeast Whitfield Tuesday night in the Warriors’ gym.

The visitors held a 9-8 lead after the first period before the home team turned things around and slowly pulled away for its ninth victory of the season, leaving them one win shy of last year’s 10-win total for the season.

The Warriors followed that game up on Friday night with a return to 7-2A action and a trip to North Murray. They will close the first half of the Region schedule Tuesday evening when they are at Model. (Details of the Gordon Central-North Murray game were not available at press time).

The game on Tuesday completed a busy stretch over the New Year weekend for the Warriors, who wrapped up play Thursday and Friday in the Gaylesville High School Holiday tournament with a pair of losses to teams from Alabama.

After whipping Valley Head, 7937, Wednesday in the first round, they lost to Westbrook Christian out of Rainbow City, AL, 53-41 before ending play Friday with a 5547 setback to Asbury High School out of Albertville, AL.

But the bounced back nicely Tuesday night for a win and entered this week looking for many more as they play the most important games on the schedule.

In the loss to Westbrook Christian, the team from Alabama also nicknamed the Warriors got out to a 17-13 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter and just built on their lead from there.

They outscored Gordon Central 15-10 in the second period to hold a 32-23 advantage at the offense. In the third, the Warriors went real cold, but used good defense to only be outscored, 8-4, in the period.

However, they were still down 40-27 to start the fourth. The Warriors did win the final period 14-13,
