Calhoun wins another meet at Southeast Whitfield

- From staff reports

On one of the few days last week it didn’t rain, the Calhoun High School track and field team was busy.

And successful.

Last Thursday, the Yellow Jackets won a four-team meet at Southeast Whitfield for their second team win in a track meet at Raider Stadium in five days.

Just removed from a first place in the team standings in the Southeast Whitfield Invitational the Saturday before, the Jackets won their second straight meet of the just-getting-started season with 99 points.

The host school was second with 81.5 points while Adairsville came in third with 51 and Heritage was fourth as a team.

The Jackets finished with six first places in the competition and dominated a couple of events like the pole vault and the long jump where they took the top three spots, to pile up the points.

In addition, the Yellow Jackets were 1-2 in the triple jump and won two of the four relay races at Southeast Whitfield.

Carter Cloer led a Calhoun sweep of the first three places in the pole vault, going over the bar at 11 feet to win the event. Teammate Matthew Williams was second at 9 feet and Calhoun vaulter Davis Ruddell was third at 8-06.

Fourth place was a height of eight feet exactly while everyone else in the field had a lower finish than that.

In the long jump, Corey McHenry won it for Calhoun at 18 feet, 10 inches. Logan Speer was second for the Jackets and overall at 18-06 and Liam Cornett took third place at 18-02 as that trio were the only ones in the field of 15 jumpers who went 18 feet or farther.

Jeric Lewis led Calhoun’s first and second-place showing in the triple jump, winning it at 40-07 for the long hop, skip, and jump beyond 40 feet. Teammate Junior McConnell was second at 37-08.5 for the black-and-Vegas-gold.

In the relays, the Swarm won the 4-x-100 and the 4-x-200 and went 1-2 in the shorter event and was first and fourth in the longer race.
