Phoenix begin 7-4A against NW Whitfield

- From staff reports

The Sonoraville High School baseball team gets its Region 7-4A season underway this week, playing Northwest Whitfield in a three-game series.

The first month of the season has seen the Phoenix up-and-down, but now they have their sights set on taking the first positive steps so far towards another berth in the GHSA 4A state playoffs.

In their first year last season in the 4A classification, they chased that Region championship until the final night of the regular season when it ended with a loss to Cedartown that sealed the league crown for the Bulldogs.

And they are hoping to duplicate that awesome run again this spring, starting this week against the Bruins, who owned the Region’s best pre-Region schedule so far, bringing a 9-2 record into the contest.

After that, Heritage, which was third last season, has the second-best mark with a 6-3 record and the Phoenix are the last team going into league action who was .500 or better with their 4-4 mark.

Central began the week with a 4-6 record thus far while Southeast Whitfield stands 3-10 and defending league champion Cedartown has gotten off to a rough beginning at 2-8 on the year.

But all of that is behind everyone as the only thing that matters is what they do from here on out, beginning this week. Besides the Sonoraville-Northwest Whitfield games, the other Region 7-4A opening-round three-game sets this week have Cedartown taking on Central and Heritage facing Southeast Whitfield and everyone looking to get off to a good start and then use that as a springboard to a great finish.

The Phoenix have had their moments thus far though, scoring 13 runs in a 13-5 win over Lamar County, 12 in a 12-1 win over Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on Feb. 27 and 11-8 last Monday in a comefrom-behind road win at Adairsville.

They have also had a couple of rough outings, which is something that hasn’t happened much the last couple of years, losing to Woodland 11-1 and Rockmart 12-2.
