Lady Jackets place second at Raider meet

The Calhoun High School girls track and field team was second last Thursday at the four-team meet at Southeast Whitfield County meet.

The Lady Raiders won the who shebang with 92 points and Calhoun had 68.5 as a team. Heritage was third and the Adairsvill­e girls closed out fourth.

Led by Bri’Nya Jones’s two first places, Calhoun won four individual events and one relay and had an outstandin­g day in a couple of different competitio­ns.

The Lady Jackets were first and second and took three of the top four places overall in both the 400-meter run and the long jump.

Janelle Ramirez featured a great finish in the 400-meters, winning it with a 1:15 as the three Calhoun runners were all within five seconds of each other. Alison Perez was second in the race with a 1:17.27 with a Heritage runner third and Calhoun’s Martinez Yamile was fourth overall at 1:20.

In the long jump, Jones won with a 13-foot distance and teammate Caroline Jones was second at 12 feet for the Lady Jackets. Marlee Hogan was fourth for CHS at 11-03 and she just missed making the top three with third place going 11 feet, 3.25 inches.

Jones was also the champion in the 300-meter hurdles. She ran a 51.82 to finish more than two seconds ahead of the runner-up time of 53.93 in the longer of the two hurdles races.

Lillian Greeson finished in a first place tie with a Southeast Whitfield competitor in the high jump with both going over at the bar at four feet.

Calhoun’s victory in the relays came in the 4-x-100 race where the four Jacket runners combined for a 1:01.50 time.

The Lady Jackets also had a couple of individual second places.

They finished with two of the top three places in the 800-meter run with Abigail Ferguson placing second at three minutes even with teammate Sophia Carreto place a 3:05. SE Whitfield freshman was first at 2:50.

Kaitlyn Kennedy was second for the Lady Jackets in the pole vault, ending the day with a 6-00.25 as Calhoun was second and fourth in the competitio­n. Bella Peek was fourth in the pack at six feet even and she just missed placing in the top three as the third place height was six feet, 0.25 inches. A 6-06 by a Heritage vaulter was the winning height.

Calhoun had two of the top five places in the 1,600-meter race. Dylan Duke was third in the mile with a 6:34 and Carreto was fifth with a 6:59. SE Whitfield went 1-2 with a 6:19 winning the race and a 6:26 the second place time.

The Jackets had a pair of fourth places in the weight events, placing fourth in the shot put while placing fourth and fifth in the discus.

Junior Ariez Hogan was fourth in the shot put with a 26-10 distance. She was four inches away from the third place heave of 27-02. The winning throw was 2804 with the only one beyond 28 feet.

Khymora Hagood was fourth in the discus and Hogan came in fifth for CHS. Hagood finished at 64 feet, one inch while Hogan had the last throw over 60 feet at 60 feet, two inches.

Calhoun’s other fifth place showing came in the 100-meters where Allison Perez was fifth at 15.96. The first place time was a 13.89 and the only time under 14 seconds.
