Voluntary Action Center Strike Out Hunger tournament registrations continue

- By Cat Webb CWebb@CalhounTimes.com

Sign-ups continue for the Voluntary Action Center’s Strike Out Hunger Bowling Tournament.

The third-annual bowling tournament will take place Tuesday, May 7 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Calhoun Bowling Center. During that event, teams will compete for the top score — and a $500 cash prize and trophy. Second and third place teams will also win a trophy.

Teams are encouraged to dress for the theme, Movie Magic. The best-dressed team will win a $100 cash prize.

Each bowler will get a t-shirt and a food truck meal voucher. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets and bid on silent auction items, as well.

Those looking to sign up — or to sponsor the event — can do so by calling 706-629-7283. This event is a large source of funding for the VAC — last year’s event netted $22,474 for the organization.

Those looking for some financial advice — or to prequalify for this year’s Operation Happy Christmas — can check out one of the VAC’s free financial education classes.

On the third Thursday of each

month at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., classes will meet at the VAC’s 343 S. Wall Street location. Parents must attend one class for the Christmas program, and those are offered in both English and Spanish.

Anyone wanting to help out at the VAC can do so by donating. The VAC is currently seeking donations of feminine hygiene products, like pads and tampons. Anyone making a donation can drop those off at the office.

Folks looking to drop off items for the thrift store can do so off of

S. Park Ave., from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The VAC accepts clothing, household items and small tools, accessories, and more.

This month, the VAC is also asking for a few items for their Community Kitchen: potatoes (including canned or instant), pasta, and rice. The Community Kitchen serves meals twice daily Monday through Friday — lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and dinner from 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Lunch is dine-in only while dinner offers to-go plates.

Those needing food assistance can also visit the food pantry once every thirty days, with proof of income and Gordon County residency. That food bank is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with no appointment, and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. with an appointment.

One other way to support the VAC is by shopping at its thrift store, which is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. This month, their tag sale means all green tags are 25% off, red tags are 50% off, and blue tags are 75% off. On Friday, March 29, shoppers can get their whole order 75% off.
