HHCS has expanded over the last decade and continues to expand with the support of the community.

HAMILTON HEALTH — CALHOUN

Hamilton Health — Calhoun, an affiliate of Hamilton Health Care System, opened its new primary care, comprehensive specialty care and walk-in care facility in December.

Located at 215 Curtis Parkway N.E. (behind Walgreens and next to McEntire’s Driving Range), the newly built 34,000-square-foot facility replaces the old offices at 100 Willowbrook Way and provides expanded services, giving patients access to comprehensive care — right in their own community.

HHCS is a longtime healthcare partner and provider for Calhoun and the surrounding area, but the new facility allows for more comprehensive, expert medical care enhanced by advanced technologies and innovative treatment modalities serving adults and children ages 2 and older. Most insurances are accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid.

Services available at this location include: family medicine, internal medicine, walkin care, rehabilitation, cardiology, diabetes treatment, endocrinology, general surgery, neurology, pain management and pulmonology. Patients can also receive lab work and imaging services including X-rays, 3D

mammograms, bone density tests, echocardiograms and cardiac stress tests.

It has been about three years since HMC began offering open-heart surgery, and the program continues to expand. Hamilton has recruited best-in-class teams of surgeons, physicians and nursing, clinical and support staff. Hamilton’s cardiology program continues to expand, adding four cardiologists in the last year and more coming in the near future.

HMC continues to receive cardiac awards and certifications, including: the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain MI Registry Gold Performance Achievement Award (HMC is one of only 56 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor); Patient Safety Award, Top 10 Percent in the State for Cardiac Care by CareChex; Patient Safety Award, Number One in the Market for Major Cardiac Surgery by CareChex; Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI and Electrophysiology Accreditation through the American College of Cardiology.

ANNA SHAW CHILDREN’S INSTITUTE

Anna Shaw Children’s Institute (ASCI), dedicated to the memory of Anna Sue Shaw, is a regional leader of and advocate for the care of children who are experiencing the challenges of autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or developmental delays. Since opening April 1, 2019, the ASCI team had 50,825 appointments, providing care to 1,853 individual patients from six states, including as far away as Alaska.

With design elements inspired by the style of a tree house, the Anna Shaw Children’s Institute was designed to be considerate of children’s differing abilities to tolerate light, sound and texture. The Institute provides a unique environment with the overall goal to blend calming color and fun play for children of all abilities.

The structure’s roof line and design are patterned after a tree house. The outside of the building pulls together the elements of glass, wood and mountain stone in a color palette of browns, greens and blues to reflect the beauty of the North Georgia mountains. The walls of windows provide for natural light to warmly flow into the interior of the building.

Services provided at ASCI include: developmental behavioral evaluation and care; child psychology testing, counseling and evaluations; applied behavior analysis therapy; physical, occupational and speech therapies; nursing services to assist with individualized care for children; family support services (including a nurse care navigator, social worker and educational resource coordinator) to assist parents with finding the best resources for their child, such as summer camps, horseback riding sessions, community support groups, legal assistance, financial support and more; and administrative support to assist with obtaining insurance pre-authorization for services.

Children can receive therapy in the Tree House Gym, a large 2,900-square-foot gym with colorful patterns on the floor, an adaptive climbing wall, an indoor slide and a fun track in the middle of the room. During pleasant weather, therapy can be enjoyed outside in the Treehouse Terrace, an outdoor therapy area with a roller slide, a spinning chair, adaptive pull up bars, a sensory wave and a fun set on tympani drums.

A unique gift shop, Treetop Treasures, features sensory friendly toys, weighted blankets, puzzles, books and other items specifically for children receiving care at the Institute.

In 2020, ASCI became the first in Georgia to achieve Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP) Certified Center of Excellence distinction. LAMP is an augmentative alternative communication (AAC) approach designed to give individuals who are nonverbal or have limited verbal abilities a method of independently expressing themselves through the use of a speechgenerating device. The treatment team of speech language pathologists (SLP) at ASCI includes two of the five LAMP-certified SLPs for this particular care coordination in Georgia. There are currently 52 children using an AAC device at ASCI.
