“Dancing with the Stars — Calhoun” is back again for its third consecutiv­e season with a new cast of dancers — 22 local high school students — and they are excited to give the audience another fun-filled, high-energy show on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, at the Calhoun Performing Arts Center. Showtimes for both performanc­es are at 7 p.m..

Eleven dance teams will compete for trophies, college scholarshi­ps, and bragging rights in the third annual event, sponsored once again by The Fountains — Calhoun.

“We have some fun surprises in store for this year’s event,” said Andy Baxter, speaking on behalf of the event organizing team. “But as always, the dancers will be the stars of the show.” The eleven couples competing this year are Luca Baxter and Walker Roe, Ava Shelton and Jaden Perkins, Briana Kirby and Landon Chattam, Ella Strickland and Jack Dean, Belinda Counsell and Trent Ferguson, Maggy Abernathy and Kam Penny, Emily Nebb and Jacob McBrayer, Karson Bone and Wyatt Fuller, Eva Hall and Grant Garnett, Danika Morton and Aaron Reyes, and Lannah Stewart and Jaxon Moore.

Danika Morton and Aaron Reyes will compete this year as Couple No. 10.

Danika Morton is Junior at Calhoun High School. She performs in theater and is a member of several clubs. Danika is the daughter of Chris and Duana Morton, she has three older brothers, Erik, Brevin and Dante. This is Danika’s third consecutiv­e year participat­ing in DWTS.

Aaron is a Senior at Calhoun High School and he is the son of Ariel Reyes and Melissa Interiano . He has two siblings, Trinity Reyes and Janel Reyes Aaron. has been a member of the Calhoun Yellow Jacket football team for the past four years and ran track for the first time since middle school this year. Aaron has no previous dance experience besides being in the play Grease, he played Kenickie his freshman year along side, Danika as Rizzo. Recently we got the chance to talk to both of them about this experience.

How did the two of you decide to enter Dancing with the Stars?

“Danika asked me to do it with her and I thought it’d be a cool experience to have.” — Aaron

“I have done it for the past two years and definitely wanted to do it again, it’s so much fun! You get to meet other students, from other schools and you form friendship­s, you bond with them all while raising money for the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n and student scholarshi­ps” — Danika

What do you think of this year’s group dance?

“This is absolutely my favorite group dance we have done so far, I’m super excited to show the crowd how hard we have worked” — Danika

“I think it’s really fun, I’m excited to perform in front of everyone.” — Aaron

What is your favorite song in the mix?

“Save a horse, ride a cowboy” — Aaron

“Country Girl Shake it for me!” — Danika

What are you most excited for about this year’s show?

“I’d say preforming the group in front of everyone.” — Aaron

“Just getting out there and performing! It’s so much FUN!” — Danika

What is your biggest worry or fear as you prepare for this year’s show?

“Falling off stage or forgetting the dance” — Aaron

“Forgetting our dance!” — Danika

Who is your favorite Country artist?

“Tyler Childers ” — Aaron “Zach Bryan” — Danika Tell us about your dance for this year’s competitio­n.

“We’re performing a pop song that’s very well known. We have a cute little dance to go along with it. We are super pumped about performing it. Our routine is choreograp­hed by Katherine Cochran and she is the absolute best! Can’t wait to show off our moves!”
