A. Wayne O’Day
DOUGLAS — A. Wayne O’Day, 76, of Wallis St. — “the Res” — passed away suddenly on Friday, Jan. 29 after being stricken ill at home. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Sally Ann (Hammond) O’Day; two children, A. Wayne O’Day, Jr. and his wife Sherry M. Bombara of Uxbridge; and Jennifer L. Ashworth and her husband Michael of Douglas; three grandchildren, Benjamin Charles, Sean Joseph, and Erin Jarvis; as well as his innumerable friends he made over the years, especially his friends in the “boathouse crew.” His sister Carol predeceased him.
Born in Woonsocket on March 3, 1939, he was the son of the late Malcolm S. and Grace (Cook) O’Day and lived in Douglas the past several years.
Wayne was a graduate of Woonsocket High School, where he played on the hockey team. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and later went on to own and operate Wayne’s Tool Service. Previously he had owned and operated AWO Tool Repair. Wayne was the epitome of neatness and organization and would entertain yearly Super Bowl parties in his hangar. Wayne was a lifelong private pilot and flew in North Central Mass. and on the Whitin Res. He flew a J3 Cub, a Supercub, and a seaplane for 35 years. Wayne’s dream was to have a family homestead on a lake and have a seaplane. He had many friends fondly referred to as the boathouse crew. He belonged to Larry’s Pitch League, enjoyed Key West, and was an avid Patriots fan. He was an active ice boater for many years, enjoyed waterskiing and boating. He also belonged to several aviation organizations over the years.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. in Jackman Funeral Home, 7 Mechanic St., Douglas. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, N. Smithfield.
