WOONSOCKET — A city man is facing a grab bag of drug, alcohol and motor vehicle charges after what police called a “low speed chase” Wednesday.

Carl T. Page, 33, of 134 Rathbun St., is charged with possession of cocaine; driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; driving on a suspended license; refusal to submit to a chemical test; failure to obey laned roadway markings; failure to obey a stop sign; and failure to obey a police officer.

Patrolman Patrick McGourty reported that he tried pulling over Page’s 2000 Dodge Durango about 1 a.m., when he drove forward instead of taking the marked turn lane onto Social Street from Elm Street.

Page turned into a driveway and backed out going the other direction just as McGourty tried to pull him over. As McGourty followed, activating his siren and overhead flashers, Page continued northbound on Rathbun Street at speeds of 5-10 miles per hour.

Page allegedly passed through a stop sign at East School Street before pulling over for the officer.

When McGourty encountered Page, the officer said his behavior was combative and verbally abusive. Page allegedly hurled a series of racial epithets at the officer, accused him of wanting to shoot him and refused repeated commands to put his hands on the dashboard.

Page was eventually pulled from the vehicle and patted down for weapons. Police said he was in possession of a small knife with a white, powdery residue that tested positive for cocaine.

Police said Page’s speech was slurred, he smelled of alcohol and his eyes were watery and bloodshot. But when he arrived at police headquarters he refused a chemical test.

In addition to the drugs, police said they seized a glass pipe from his vehicle.

Police said Page had a passenger in the car – a registered sex offender who had been released from the Adult Correctional Institutions one day before the motor vehicle stop. That individual was released without charges.

At his arraignment in Sixth District Court, Page was ordered held at the ACI in lieu of bail. He’s due back in court on April 6.
