BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES
1952Don Read, Pawtucket East’s star freestyler, was the only double winner as the defending state champion Redjackets dumped the Saint Raphael Academy swimmers from the undefeated ranks with a 43-34 triumph. Read captured both the 50-yard (25.0) and the 100 (56.0) sprints, while teammates Will Fregeau 100 breaststroke (1:08.2), Frank Merchel 150 individual medley (1:46.2), Al Carpenter 200 freestyle (2:18.7) and Ray Mailhot diving (50.6 points) took their specialties. For the outclassed Saints, Jim Coffey pulled the surprise of the meet by handing Merchel his first 100 backstroke (1:10.7) defeat of the season.

Mike Aragao, despite a tough night, contributed 15 points for Cumberland. Dan Kennedy and Bill St. Angelo tallied 15 and 12 points, respectively, for the 1-9 Hawks.
