BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES

- — By Bill Mulholland

1952Don Read, Pawtucket East’s star freestyler, was the only double winner as the defending state champion Redjackets dumped the Saint Raphael Academy swimmers from the undefeated ranks with a 43-34 triumph. Read captured both the 50-yard (25.0) and the 100 (56.0) sprints, while teammates Will Fregeau 100 breaststroke (1:08.2), Frank Merchel 150 individual medley (1:46.2), Al Carpenter 200 freestyle (2:18.7) and Ray Mailhot diving (50.6 points) took their specialties. For the outclassed Saints, Jim Coffey pulled the surprise of the meet by handing Merchel his first 100 backstroke (1:10.7) defeat of the season.

1962Rugged Ron Clement was the Clipper pace setter with 23 points and another excellent job on the boards as Cumberland routed Pawtucket Vocational 63-34 to move into a tie for third place in the Class B playoff race. Mike Aragao, despite a tough night, contributed 15 points for Cumberland. Dan Kennedy and Bill St. Angelo tallied 15 and 12 points, respectively, for the 1-9 Hawks.

1972Undefeated (10-0) Mount St. Charles Academy romped past a shorthanded Cumberland quintet 7046 in Class A East Division action. Paul Berard led a balanced MSC attack with 20 points, Roger Samson and Rick Zienowicz netted 13 apiece and Dick Leclaire had 10. Steve Lukasiewicz shared game-high honors with Berard while Kevin Coleman chipped in with 10 for the 3-7 Clippers.
