Clippers suffer first defeat

CUMBERLAND — The biggest match in Thursday’s Division I-A showdown between undefeated Cumberland and South Kingstown proved to be the difference in the dual.

Cumberland senior Moulaye Snngare met South Kingstown senior Mason Duran in a 152pound match that will likely be the state final at the end of the month. The South County and Hurricane Invitation­al champion secured a reversal in the second period and a takedown in the third to earn a four-point win, as the Rebels escaped the Wellness Center with a 36-33 victory.

Technicall­y, the meet came down to the 2985-pound bout where Cumberland’s Jaylen Reynolds suffered a 7-2 defeat to Thomas Cary.

The Clippers found themselves in a 12-point deficit after two matches because of a forfeit at 106 pounds and a Chris Leser pin at 113 pounds. It took Cumberland just four matches to tie the meet up thanks to pins from Jeremy Batista (120), Kylie Creamer (132) and Noah Tougas (138).

Malik Sangare earned an impressive, 8-5 victory over Hurricane Invitation­al finalist Tyler Duckworth, but then Duran handed Moulaye Sangare has firstdual-meet.

Jake Drezek put the Clippers up by six with a pin at 160 pounds before Reymi Acevedo earned important powerpoint­s with a 5-3 victory over Connecticu­t Challenge champion Jack Hayes at 170 pounds.

Aaron Edson tied the score with a 4-0 win over Kareem Sanagre, but senior Nate Skawsinki stayed undefeated in state with a 1:41 pin of Sean Holmander.

Cumberland (13-1 Division I-A) heads to Bennington, Vt. Saturday to take part in the Mount Anthony duals. The regular season concludes Wednesday when undefeated Hendricken visits the Wellness Center.
