Storm postpones Valley contests
Cumberland, Westerly boys meet in crucial D-II contest Saturday
WOONSOCKET — Winter Storm Lexi dropped nearly a foot of snow in the Blackstone Valley and forced area athletic directors to reschedule a number of contests with the regular seasons of most sports winding down.
Area boys basketball teams were hardest hit with eight of the area’s 11 teams forced to reschedule games. Cumberland, which has dropped two straight games to two of the top teams in Division II, has already rescheduled its contest with first place Westerly,
Jacee Hamelin and the Bulldogs come to the Wellness Center Saturday at 6 p.m. to face Brandon Kolek and the Clippers.
Red-hot Lincoln and winless North Smithfield have also already rescheduled their Division II contest, with Drew O’Donnell and the Northmen headed across the Valley to face Jermaine Perez, Tommy Beauchemin and the Lions Monday at 7 p.m.
The only other rescheduled game is Central Falls’ visit to Mt. Hope, which will now take place Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. in Bristol.
The highly-anticipated Division I showdown between St. Raphael and Hendricken in Warwick, Smithfield’s visit to Woonsocket, Prout’s trip to Tolman and Burrillville’s road game with Masters were all postponed and haven’t been rescheduled.
The Valley’s lone girls basketball game between Shea and Burrillville will now be played on Monday, Feb. 15 in Burrillville.
The Mount St. Charles/Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op hockey team was scheduled to face the South County Storm in a potential Division I semifinal preview at Adelard. The contest has not been rescheduled.
The Lincoln, North Smithfield and Cumberland hockey teams all had road games postponed Friday night, but the contests have not been rescheduled.
Lincoln’s swim teams and the Tolman girls swim team also had their meets postponed. The Tigers are scheduled to compete in the Division III meet Sunday at Roger Williams University.
