BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES

- — By Bill Mulholland

1966Bob Fields of Pawtucket shot a birdie the hard way at the Deer Run Golf Course by knocking his second tee shot right into the cup on the 298-yard, par four, eighth hole. The unique hole-inone – or, more accurately, the hole-in-three – occurred after Fields had hooked his first tee shot out of bounds to the left, thereby incurring a stroke penalty. Playing in a threesome with his father, Albert, and Bill Amado, also both of Pawtucket, Bob drove his second shot, with a two wood, over a marker flag on a hill in front of the tee with the ball flying straight toward the green, which is downhill the rest of the way.

1986Brian Beech allowed 10 hits, two earned runs and six walks while fanning another half-dozen as Saint Raphael Academy posted a relatively easy 8-3 win over Pilgrim in the first game of the initial round of the Class A playoffs. Offensively, Mike Potter and Felix Ramos both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Shaun Ramos chipped in with a triple, three RBI and a run scored. Coach Tom Sorrentine’s Saints, who will meet Warwick in round two, are now 19-1 overall.

1996Scott Tetreault hurled a two-hitter and knocked in three runs with two doubles and a single and first baseman Steve Troufield knocked in six runs as Tolman clinched a tie for the Blackstone Valley Division crown with an easy 14-2 win Smithfield. Tetreault, who did not yield a base hit until the sixth inning, fanned four and walked four. Paul Catarina, an All-State shortstop, belted a double, triple and two singles, Troufield ripped two triples and a single and Bill Karalis, who moved to catcher due to an injury to regular backstop Scott Cooper, raised his average over .300 with a pair of hits.
