Cumberland Parks & Rec announces golf clinics for children, adults

-

CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland Parks & Recreation Department is continuing to hold its beginner golf clinics for children ages 6-15, as well as adults, at Wentworth Hills Country Club on 27 Bow Street in Plainville, Mass.

The children’s clinics consist of four one-hour lessons, and they can attend the weekly clinics each Sunday in June from 10 to 11 a.m. The cost of the clinic is $119.

The teaching style is fun and friendly in a structured clinic-style setting, and the clinics are geared to those new to the game, as well as those with some golf experience.

The adult clinics also consist of four one-hour lessons, each spaced a week apart (the same day and time for four weeks). Each lesson will focus on a specific part of the game, and at the end of each clinic, adults will have knowledge of the basic fundamentals, such as how to use a full swing with irons and woods, and “short game” skills (pitching, chipping and putting).

Golfers can attend the weekly clinics each Sunday in June from 10 to 11 a.m. or each Tuesday in June from 6 to 7 p.m. The cost of each adult clinic is $169.

Also, a three-class “on the course” series will be offered at Wentworth Hills for those who have taken the beginner program and are ready to head to the course.

The first session is an introduction to the pro shop, registering, playing etiquette/pace of play, how to set up your first tee shot, and other necessary golf basics. In the next two sessions, golfers will be out on the course learning club selection for various shots, ‘short game’ techniques, how to keep a good pace of play, and a few basic rules.

The first round of this series will be held on three consecutive Fridays (May 20 and 27 and June 3) at 6 p.m., and the class fee is $169.

The instructor for the clinics is Barrie Bruce, a PGA teaching professional from the Barrie Bruce Golf Schools. Equipment and practice balls will be provided. All participants need are a pair of sneakers and a good attitude.

Call the Parks and Recreation Department at (401) 334-9996 for more details or to reserve a space in any of the clinics.
