Curriculum will be held on Friday, Dec. 16, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Brookdale Cumberland (10 Old Diamond Hill Road).
The curriculum is a trainthe-trainer model created to prepare attendees, already familiar with Alzheimer's and dementia care, to train direct care staff in a wide array of care settings. The seven-hour training teaches attendees the 13 hour curriculum in best Habilitation Therapy practices. Modules include a Power-Point presentation, discussion activities, lecture, and demonstration, role-play and group work. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Module topics include: Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia; Habilitation Therapy; Knowing and Understanding the Individual; Communication Skills; Does the Physical Environment Make a Difference; Our Approach to Personal Care; Activity and Purposeful Engagement; Behavior as Communication; Understanding and Working with Families
Pre-registration is required and the class size is limited to 25.

Companion caregivers respite program
BELLINGHAM — This in-home respite service is provided by a trained companion after the care recipient has been determined to be eligible for the program. The program provides socialization and stimulation for the care recipi- ent, through an activities plan developed for that individual, based on his or her interests and abilities.
The care recipient must be an elder (aged 60 and over) with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, a related dementia, or a significant chronic medical condition that requires 24-hour care.
Services are offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and weekends on a limited basis, and includes meal or snack preparation, conversation, reading, writing, playing cards or games. For more details, call Camille at 508-520-4945.
