Man charged in Foundry St. shooting
At about 1:30 a.m. on March 3, police say, Garcia and Rojas were among a group of individuals who clashed with another outside a house at 27 Foundry St. after some of the same people got into an argument at a nightclub in Providence.
As the feud turned physical, shots rang out. Magaly Desjardin, 25, was shot in the face while a second victim, Carlos Carasquillo Baez, 28, suffered a gunshot wound to the back. Force, acting on information developed by Woonsocket Detective Sgt. George McMann.
Another man, Diego Garcia, 27, also of Woonsocket, was arrested in connection with the shooting on March 8. Garcia is free on $60,000 surety bond following his arraignment on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon; possession of a firearm after a conviction for a crime of violence; use of a firearm while committing a crime of violence; firing in a compact area; and disorderly conduct.
The WPD was planning to arraign him in Sixth District Court, Providence, on two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, but Ryan said the timing depends on how soon Rojas is returned to the state.
Ryan said Rojas was arrested at 139 Sargeant St. in Holyoke by that city’s police and the Massachusetts State Police Fugitive Task
WOONSOCKET – A second individual police had been seeking in a March 3 shooting on Foundry Street that left two people with serious injuries has been arrested in Holyoke, Mass.
Joshua Rojas, 23, a city resident, was due for arraignment in Holyoke District Court on fugitive charges yesterday, said Detective Sgt. Matt Ryan of the Woonsocket Police Department.
Both were transported to Rhode Island Hospital for injuries that police described as serious but not life-threatening.
Ryan said police believe both Rojas and Garcia discharged firearms at the Foundry Street crime scene. Police issued a warrant for Rojas’ arrest shortly after the incident, asking for information from anyone who might know of his whereabouts.
Rojas has a criminal history that involves firearms. He was on probation after a 2013 conviction in a city police case that involved gun charges, and free on bail from pending charges in another that involved firearms, at the time of the shooting.
The Warwick Police Department charged Rojas with breaking and entering and larceny or sale of a stolen firearm in September. The judiciary’s web site says Rojas was free on $20,000 surety bail while the case is pending.
The Woonsocket police department charged Rojas with larceny or sale of a stolen firearm and two additional counts – felony assault and extortion – in 2013. The case was eventually transferred to the Attorney General’s Gun Court, where the firearms charge was dismissed in a plea agreement. Rojas received some prison time, but he’s been serving a 114-month probation sentence since June 2014 in that case.
