Jackvony produces 5-2 high jump in Cumberland sweep

CUMBERLAND – Head coach Vanessa Molloy was impressed with quite a few of her girls’ outings during Cumberland High’s season-opening Northern Division sweep of Woonsocket (98-43) and Mount St. Charles (84-49) at Tucker Field on raw Wednesday afternoon.

None, however, awed her more than the one achieved by junior Dayna Jackvony, who in the high jump leaped 5-2, exactly four inches higher than her lifetime best.

“That 5-2 puts her in range to be among the top jumpers in the state; that’s a terrific jump this early in the season,” Molloy stated after her squad improved to 2-0. “It was exciting to see that (Wednesday, with it being so cold.

“I’m actually delighted with everyone’s performance because it’s so early,” she added. “We’ve had no specialty (event) training at all. Considering they were supposed to be shaking out the rust, they did much better than I anticipated.”

Of the eight individual running events, the Clippers claimed six, with senior Mackenzie Vallely capturing the 400 meters (1:05.3), classmate Colleen Enestvedt the 800 (2:33.9), fellow senior Julia Dempsey the 1,500 (5:07.4) and junior Ana O’Callaghan the 3,000 (11:44.9).

Abby Drezek chipped in a triumph in the 300 low hurdles (54.3) and second in the 100 high hurdles (17.8), just nine-tenths of a second off the winning time provided by Villa Novans’ sophomore Alissiana Folco.

Kat Houle chipped in a win in the javelin (74-5), senior Julianne Ross the same in the triple jump (32-8) and Marissa Henley another in the hammer toss (123-6). In fact, soon-to-begraduate Jaylynne Thomas ran away with the shot put (33-5), and added a third in the spear.

“I thought our throwers did a great job because we haven’t been able to practice at our throwing sites,” Molloy said. “They’ve been off-limits due to assorted reasons,” one of which has been the weather.

Not surprisingly, senior phenom Quinn Harlan paced the Woonsocket girls, gathering victories in the 100 dash (12.3), 200 (26.7) and long jump (16-7 ½).

Still, other WHS first-place finishes were recorded by Marissa Henley in the hammer (123-6); Gabriella Ribeiro in the discus (82-0), and Folco in the 100 hurdles (16.9).

For the Mounties, who split their two meets following an 86-55 verdict over Woonsocket, the 4 x 100 relay – consisting of Marina Schmid, Eileen Whalen, Paige Fitzpatrick and Hannah Tousignant – reigned in 54.0. Schmid, Whalen, Faye Cournoyer and Tousignant doubled their pleasure with a triumph in the 4 x 400 relay (4:40.6).

Tousignant contributed runner-up placements in the 100 and 200, while Cournoyer achieved second in the 400; and Hannah Trottier the same in the javelin and discus, and a third in the shot put. 4x100m relay – 1.
