2017 Call/Times Boys Swimming All-Star Team
Ethan Potvin St. Raphael
Call Potvin a young man without a team, as SRA doesn’t offer a boys’ swim team like it had decades before. Still, competing as an independent, he placed 13th in the 500 freestyle with a superb clocking of 5:38.96.
Garrett Scahill Lincoln
This co-captain with fellow senior Danny Lin claimed third in the 100 butterfly (1:07.39) and the same in the 100 backstroke (1:04.56) at the Division III meet. At the same event, he also swam the fly leg on the runnerup 200 medley relay (1:56.39) before it nailed down 11th at the state meet (season-best 1:55.75).
Ian Zito Cumberland
Zito didn’t assemble the kinds of times he had hoped early on, as the flu kept … well, bugging him. It showed in his Read/Watmough appearance, when he finished sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:54.86) and seventh in the 500 (5:10.37) … He admitted he was still not up to snuff at the D-I meet, when he took fifth at the 200 distance (1:51.24) and fourth at the longer (5:08.20).
Zach Dabosky Mount St. Charles
He exhibited his versatility in a few events during the course of the season. At the Read/Watmough, he managed 12th in the 200 freestyle (1:59.47) and 13th in the 100 butterfly (59.23), but chose to compete in the 200 individual medley at the D-III meet at RWU on Feb. 17. Not only did he take second in 2:17.43, but also won the butterfly event in 1:01.30 … He failed to place at states in the butterfly, but did notch a point with a 16th in the 200 freestyle (1:59.85).
Connor Hayden Cumberland
No one was more thrilled than this co-captain after he stroked to a lifetime-best clocking of 5:28.37 in the 500 freestyle, good for 11th at the state meet. Less than a week before, at the Division I event, he mustered ninth in the 500 with a then-PR of 5:33.03. Maybe an hour before that milestone, he took 10th in the 200 freestyle (2:00.82).
Kevin Connors Cumberland
Because Connors had produced such a quick time in the 100 freestyle at the state meet, McGarry told him he would serve on the 200 freestyle relayr. Connors responded in style, splitting a best-ever 50 time of 24.63. Without him, the Clippers wouldn’t have snagged third behind only team champion Hendricken and La Salle.
Ian Horst-kamp-Vinekar Cumberland
At states, McGarry decided to place him in the 200 freestyle rather than the IM, and Horstkamp-Vinekar sailed to third in 1:48.21. Perhaps 45 minutes later, he took fourth in the 100 butterfly (PR of 53.24) … “The thing about Ian, he’s another one who loves to race, and he’s going to dominate the headlines for years to come, and those will be his days,” McGarry said.
