Jones named RIIL’s Male Athlete of Year

PAWTUCKET – Stellar seasons on the gridiron and hardwood has landed St. Raphael senior Trevante Jones some impressive recognitio­n.

Jones was named the Rhode Island Interschol­astic League’s 2017 Male Athlete of the Year at last week’s RIIL Awards Luncheon in Warwick. The award is given to Rhode Island high school student-athletes who excel in the classroom and during competitio­n, participat­e in multiple school-sponsored sports and demonstrat­e good citizenshi­p in their school and community. The award also includes a $1,000 college scholarshi­p.

Jones has been a member of the football and basketball teams all four years of his St. Raphael career and served as each squad’s captain as a senior. A key player for SRA’s Division I team, Jones was named to USA Today’s 2016 American Family Insurance ALL-USA Rhode Island Football Team (First Team, Defense) and received the Coaches Associatio­n – All-Division, Division 1A, First Team – Defense (LB) award. He was also named RIIL Athlete of the Month in November.

A double-double machine who was never afraid to mix it up down low, Jones averaged 13 points and 13 rebounds this past season for the SRA that advanced to the Final Four of the open state tournament. He also netted his 1,000th career point in his senior year and finished just shy of finishing with 1,000 career rebounds.

He was a second-team all-state pick by the Coaches’ Associatio­n and also earned second-team all-division kudos. In addition, Jones also landed a spot on the Pawtucket Times/Woonsocket Call’s All-Area squad,

Away from sports, Jones been active with RIIL, as a member of the Student Advisory Board and a participan­t in the RIIL Student Leader Workshop and Leadership Conference. He also volunteers with youth football and basketball camps at the Providence Boys and Girls Club, and worked at summer sports camps for the City of Providence. In addition, Jones is an honor roll student at St. Raphael Academy.

A resident of Providence, Trevante plans to study kinesiolog­y in college. He’s yet to decide which school he’ll be attending in the fall.
