Lions’ Andrews proves on target once again, wins discus event at Schomp meet

- STAFF REPORTS

NARRAGANSETT — As always, the Rick Schomp Invitational Championships proves to be a measuring stick for area athletes preparing for their upcoming divisional, class and state championship events, and some are further along than others.

Never was that more true than in the boys’ hammer throw at Narragansett High on Saturday. Senior 25pound weight toss state champion Jared Briere failed to win his specialty, as classmate Dilyn Cote captured it with a hefty launch of 205-7. Briere settled for runner-up honors (193-1), while Lincoln junior Garrett Doyle placed third (190-5) and WHS senior Jake Greenless fourth (190-4).

Cote’s triumph was the only gold accepted by area stalwarts on this day, though Doyle snagged second in the discus (144-6); Central Falls sophomore Leonardo DaVeiga third in the 100meter dash (11.10); North Smithfield sophomore Xavier Croteau fourth in the same race (11.10); Burrillville junior Nick Deering third in the triple jump (41-8 ½); Villa Novan sophomore Hezekiah Adeyeye fourth in the 400 (51.90); and Broncos’ senior Jeff Pichie fourth in the 3,000 (9:01.80).

Pichie also combined with Cam Charron, Andrew McClure and Antonio Rua to take third in the 4 x 800 relay (8:36.50), while Deering teamed with brother Brandon, Camden Harrigan and Kyle Rainville on the third-place 4 x 100 relay (47.00).

Hendricken ran away with the team title, posting 86 points, twice the amount of No. 2 La Salle. Woonsocket mustered the top spot among local teams, tying East Greenwich with 28.

On the girls’ side, Lincoln senior Sam Andrews collected the discus victory with a heave of 127-5, though had to settle for sixth in the hammer (147-9).

Villa Novans’ senior Quinn Harlan managed a pair of seconds in the 100 (12.10) and 200 dashes (26.10), though also earned fourth in the long jump (16-7 ¾). In those sprints, Harlan lost the former by a tenth of a second to East Greenwich senior Isabella Gentil, and the latter by the same margin to La Salle soon-to-be graduate Alexandria Montagno.

Cumberland senior Julia Dempsey hustled to one of her best 1,500 times to grab third (4:45.40), and WHS sophomore Alissiana Folco placed third in the 100 high hurdles (16.00). For the Broncos, Karlee Cournoyer not only placed fourth in the triple jump (34-3), but combined with Sabrina Charron, Tanaihya Harmon and Kariana Roman to take sixth in the 4 x 400 relay.

Actually, Mount St. Charles assembled a solid showing, with Hannah Trottier finishing second in the javelin (98-7); Eileen Whalen fifth in the 400 (1:01.30) and seventh in the 100 (13.10); and Marina Schmid fifth in the triple jump (34-2), just an inch behind Cournoyer.

The Mounties’ 4 x 400 quartet of Whalen, Schmid, Hannah Tousignant and Faye Cournoyer chipped in a runner-up with a superb clocking of 4:14.70.

With Harlan’s placements and 20-point workload, Woonsocket finished in a tie for ninth in the team standings with Central and North Kingstown (26) to lead all area squads.

CHS senior Abby Drezek mustered fifth in the 300 low hurdles (50.10).
