Howarth hits two-run homer in 10th to spark Saints victory

WAKEFIELD — Haley Howarth proved to be the difference between St. Raphael Academy and Prout Tuesday afternoon.

Howarth accounted for all five of her team’s runs in a 5-3 10-inning victory over the Crusaders. With the game tied in the 10th and Micayla Bourski starting the inning on second per internatio­nal tiebreaker rules, Howarth belted a two-run home run off of Kate Brouillett­e to provide the Saints with the runs they would need to end the marathon contest.

St. Raphael (6-3 Division II) opened the scoring in the first when Ashley Bullen singled and scored on a Howarth double. The senior scored later in the inning on a ground out by freshman catcher Sailor Costa.

Prout (6-5 Division II) answered with its only three runs in the second inning against starter Sydney Charette. Charette only struck out one batter and coach Ron LaBree said his team’s defense was the best it’s been all season.

The Saints tied the game in the seventh when Bullen reached on an error and scored on a Howarth triple.

The Saints are back in action Thursday afternoon against three-loss Rogers at the Hank Soar Complex. twice in the sixth inning to secure the win.

Mount St. Charles (9-3 Division II) produced four hits against starter Madison Plouffe in the third inning to score four runs. Emily Cournoyer, Young and Riley Mulligan singled to load the bases with no outs. Emily D’Abrosca and Shea Kelliher delivered backto-back fielder’s choice, before Marissa Santoro and Sky O’Connell hit RBI singles.

The Mounties had a chance to tie the game in the seventh when Young, who was 3-fof-3, and pinch hitter Mackenzie Morin each singled. Plouffe set down D’Abrosca and Kelliher to end the contest.

Mount St. Charles heads to Roger Williams Park Thursday afternoon to face struggling Juanita Sanchez.
