Tolman, Shea recognize Key Player Spirit Award winners from spring season
PAWTUCKET — Student-athletes at Tolman and Shea high schools were recently recognized and awarded the Key Player Spirit Award for the spring 2017 interscholastic season.
Sponsored by Key Group, Mortgage Division and Spirit Recognition, the award is presented to one athlete from each Tolman and Shea spring sports team who exemplifies perseverance, effort, spirit, sportsmanship, teamwork, role model, determination and academics.
The following Shea student-athletes were selected:
Leonel Borges – Baseball
Head coach Dino Campopiano: “Leo is an amazing young man who has a bright future ahead of him. He is a true team player. Always at practice, he works hard to make himself a better player. Leo will do whatever the coaches ask of him. He will be missed next year!”
Ana Brasil – Golf
Head coach Ray Pita: “Ana has participated on the golf team for four years. She has shown exceptional effort in such a demanding sport. Her greatest attribute has been her tenacity and sportsmanship. She has always represented Shea as an outstanding student-scholar athlete.”
Esther Kayode – Girls’ Outdoor Track
Head coach Greg Clark: “Esther showed up to practice rain or shine. All her hard work and dedication showed in each race. She fits all the qualities of a team captain and was a great example for the younger Shea athletes.”
Brian Bericochea – Boys’ Outdoor Track
Head coach Rich Kucal: “Brian is a hardworking and dedicated member of the team who always brings a positive and focused attitude to each practice and meet. He leads by example and never seeks any recognition.”
Jalixa Agudelo – Softball
Head coach Alyssa McCoart: “Jalixa is a role model for her teammates. She shows up to practices and games with such a positive attitude and great energy. She always cheers her teammates on and encourages them to do their best.”
Daoleung Thounsavath – Boys’Tennis
Co-head coaches Candy Turner/John Jasionowski: “Dao has been a consistent and dedicated member of the team this year. He has shown his teammates that with hard work, your game will improve. He has also shown that some laughter and lighthearted moments can boost a team’s moral. Dao has played in every match and also performed at every singles position due to absences. Not once did he complain. He was a breath of fresh air and a positive influence on the other players.
Michael Kodua – Boys’Volleyball
Head coach Chris Daily: “Michael is a leader on and off the court. He has a positive attitude when interacting with his team and other teams we compete against. He works hard and expects the same from his team. He has great leadership qualities that I'm sure will follow him into his bright future.” The following Tolman student-athletes were selected:
Jaylee Martinez – Softball
Head coach Craig Giarrusso: “Jaylee missed her freshman year due to foot surgery. There are days her foot still bothers her and she has had to ice it due to swelling. However; she works hard and does anything she is asked to do. She is a team player who works hard and has been a great asset to this year’s team.”
Ben Capela – Baseball
Head coach Theo Murray: “Ben displays hard work, dedication, and perseverance at all times.
Whether it involves playing in the game or helping in the dugout, he is the ultimate team player. He never complains about his role and he encourages team mates to do the same.”
Brandon Bun – Boys’Outdoor Track
Head coach John Toth: “A first-time participant, Brandon showed tremendous dedication and improved his time with each meet. He will be a nice addition to next year’s cross-country team.
Bruno Gomes – Boys’Tennis
Co-head coaches Candy Turner/John Jasionowski: “Bruno has been a quiet team leader who has led by being a consistent competitor, a great communicator and a wonderful representative of our co-op team from Pawtucket.”
Abigail Chingo – Girls’ Outdoor Track
Head coach Kayla Fleming: “Abigail will do whatever you ask of her. She was very helpful to the girls that had never done outdoor track before. She cares about her grades and knows
how to balance her time between school and extracurricular activities. Abigail continues to improve each year and is a joy to have her on my team.”
Josh Goncalves – Boys’Volleyball
Head coach Neil Nachbar: “Josh has maintained high grades throughout his high school career. On the court, Josh has been a go-to player. He has performed well under pressure and led the team to many victories.”
