WOONSOCKET – With an additional 4,000 square feet of space, a brighter and more wide-open floor plan and tons of additional treadmills and new state-of-the-art exercise equipment, Planet Fitness of Woonsocket opened Tuesday in its new location in the Walnut Hill shopping plaza on Diamond Hill Road.

And longtime members of the “Judgment Free” gym couldn’t be happier with the new digs.

“It’s awesome,” said member Judy Zagaglia of Woonsocket, a Planet Fitness member for the past five years. “The bathrooms and locker rooms are gorgeous and everything is laid out right and beautifully done.”

“We’ve gone from 17,000 to 21,000 square feet of space. There’s better visibility and parking and the gym itself is more functional.”

Zagaglia works out regularly at the gym with her two friends, Diana Lambert and Lorraine Boisvert.

“I walked in for the first time today and I was like ‘wow!” said Lambert. “It’s awesome the way they have it set up.”

Planet Fitness of Woonsocket moved from its former location in the Woonsocket Plaza at 2000 Diamond Hill - where it operated for 10 years in the former Staples building – to the Walnut Hill Plaza at 1500 Diamond Hill Road, next to the Aero Trampoline Park.

Planet Fitness of Woonsocket co-owners and husband and wife team, Stephen and Ann Marie Lukin, opened the doors of the new gym after a threemonth top-to-bottom renovation project that transformed their half of the former Shaw’s Superstore into a sparkling brand-new stateof-the art gym. The facility opened for members for the first time yesterday.

The new Woonsocket Planet Fitness is 21,000square-feet, offering members a larger, brighter and more comfortable space to work out.

The transition moving from the old building into the new building took only six days and the gym still employs the same friendly and helpful staff of 15 employees, including manager Jason Emmett of Woonsocket, who is also the regional manager of the Lukins’ two other Planet Fitness facilities in Coventry and Warwick.

“Everything about this new location is better,” says Ann Marie Lukin. “We’ve gone from 17,000 to 21,000 square feet of space. There’s better visibility and parking and the gym itself is more functional.”

The building renovations included everything from new lighting to HVAC to plumbing, and plenty of new and improved amenities, including locker, shower and changing rooms double the size of the old locker rooms; day lockers that include built-in phone chargers; and a hydrating station where members can refill water bottles. The stations have counters to show volume of water dispensed and also estimate how many plastic bottles are saved by providing free chilled and filtered water.

The gym has also doubled the number of high-definition large screen televisions, which means there is now a television above every treadmill.

The Black Card Spa for black card members is bigger and better with new hydro massage machines, massage chairs and tanning facilities.

The entire gym is ADA compliant, which ensures the facility is accessible to people with disabilities.

The gym boasts 100 pieces of cardio equipment, including treadmills, ellipticals, arc trainers, upright recumbent bikes, step mills and more. The new gym offers 30-minute circuit training with strength machines and cardio step boxes for a full workout in just 30 minutes. The gym also offers free fitness training with a certified trainer who helps maximize workouts with machines and weights.

A stretching area is available, as are plenty of dumbbells and free weights for people who want to perform body weight exercises. All of the weights are rubberized to avoid making noise if they are dropped.

Stephen Lukin says there will be a formal grand opening and ribbon-cutting celebration open to the public in on a date to be announced September, which will likely include an appearance by Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt and city officials. There will also be free pizza and promotional giveaways.

Lukin said the gym will also present a donation to the Boys & Girls Club of Woonsocket in recognition of their partnership to combat bullying.

In the meantime, the Planet Fitness of Woonsocket is promoting a special membership offer in honor of the new Diamond Hill location. From now until Aug. 15, new members can join for just $1 down and $10 a month.

While the location is new, Planet Fitness’s “No Judgment Zone” philosophy is still the same.

“We want people to feel comfortable and we work really hard to create a comfortable, friendly and warm environment,” says Anne Marie.

Planet Fitness Woonsocket is open “24five” – from midnight Monday all the way through 9 p.m. on Friday. They are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
