Blackstone Heritage Corridor announces upcoming events

SATURDAY, AUG. 19

CUMBERLAND — Join Blackstone Heritage Corridor Trail Ambassador volunteer guide Ernie as he leads this 2 -to-3 mile hike along a short section of the Warner Trail climbing to the summit of Diamond Hill. On clear days, Boston is visible to the northeast. This hike can be moderate to difficult for some. We will hike at a relaxed pace. Wear sturdy shoes, bring your water, sunscreen/bug spray, a camera and binoculars.

9 a.m. to noon, Diamond Hill Park, 4097 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland

SUNDAY, AUG. 20

WOONSOCKET — Join the Blackstone River Watershed Council / Friends of the Blackstone for a river cleanup in Woonsocket. This volunteer activity will start at River Island Park and end at the soccer fields at the River’s Edge Recreation Complex on Davison Avenue. Volunteers will paddle in canoes to remove debris from the Blackstone River. Lifejacket­s and canoes will be provided. Please RSVP in advance to Keith@Blackstone­River.org so that enough equipment can be made available. Volunteers can also assist in this effort from land.

Paddle and Party on Spring Lake — all are wel- come!

Meet at 6 p.m.; launching promptly at 6:15. We will put in and paddle around Spring Lake to the waterfront home of Julie and Steve for a party. For more informatio­n, contact hosts and leaders Julie and Steve at juliebrv@charter.net

This paddle is suitable for all abilities.

Directions for the Spring Lake boat ramp:

From Route 146 north, take Slatersvil­le/Forestdale exit. At end of the ramp, take left onto School Street. School Street merges into Greene Street in Slatersvil­le, next to white church. Greene Street then becomes Main Street. Follow Main street until end at light at intersecti­on with Route 102/Bronco Highway. Make a left onto Route 102. Follow Route 102 about 2 miles to Glendale. At Bella’s Restuarant, on left, take left on to access road. At end of road, turn right onto Victory Highway and first right onto Joslin Road. Take first left onto Spring Lake Road. Proceed about 1/2 mile and take left onto Black Hut Road — there is a sign to the beach here. Go past Spring Lake beach parking lot and follow Black Hut along the shore line of the lake through a small lake front neighborho­od. State boat launch will be on right at the bend in the road.

From Route 295: Take Exit 8B for Route 7 North. Follow Route 7 north about 7 miles to light at intersecti­on with Route 102. Turn left onto 102. Follow Route 102 about 1 mile to Glendale. Proceed as previously described from Bella’s.

Please check the Message Board at http://www.rickaflatw­ater.org/bvpaddlers.htm for updates and cancellati­ons before leaving for the trip. In the event of a cancellati­on, we will try to offer this paddle on the Wednesday after the scheduled paddle.

Lifejacket­s must be worn, $25 annual dues for membership with Rhode Island Canoe & Kayak Associatio­n and Blackstone Valley Paddle Club.
