1959Bob Mendes raced 52 yards with an intercepte­d pass for the game’s lone touchdown and passed to Chick Carter for the PAT in the first period as the defending champion Pawtucket Elks made their seasonal debut by blanking the Cranston Bulldogs 7-0 in a R. I. Pre-Teen Football League tilt. Ronnie Magnum and Allen Addison ran well for the Elks while linebacker­s Pat Brady and Bob Maitland stood out defensivel­y. In other league action, the Darlington Braves were upset by the East Providence Mohawks 12-6 with the Braves scoring on a 25-yard aerial from Mike Dalton to John Sartini.

1969Pete Moreau turned in a record-breaking performanc­e covering the 2.4-mile North Smithfield X-C course in 11:44 to better the previous mark by 17 seconds to pace coach Howie Boyaj’s defending champion Lincoln harriers to their 24th straight duel meet victory defeating Sacred Heart 17-46 and North Smithfield 15-45. Terry Moran and Steve Hulme of Lincoln finished second and third, respective­ly, as the Lions took seven of the first 10 spots. Don Couture was the Beavers best performer finishing fourth.

1989Coach Lee Markowski’s Cumberland field hockey team, winless in 19 consecutiv­e matches over the past two seasons, clawed its way into the victory column with an exciting 1-0 win over always-tough Barrington. The Clippers lone score came 23 minutes into the contest when Missy Procter found the range, assisted by Erin Crossland. Kim Moody was credited with 12 saves on the afternoon, while Markowski praised the play of Kendra Corriveau and Crossland in addition to Moody and Procter.
