SKATING OPENS AT BERNON PARK

-

WOONSOCKET – The skating pond and the oversized hockey rink located inside Bernon Park currently offer ideal skating conditions for all ages this winter.

As of Tuesday, the park’s man-made ice is about 9 inches thick with snow already cleared or groomed from its top surface, according to Director of Public Works Steven P. D’Agostino. “We want the public to know Bernon Park is currently a safe place to skate,” stated Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt. Additionally, Ber- non Park offers lighting that illuminates the ice from dusk to 10 p.m. to improve night vision for skaters.

“Safety is the top priority when it comes to considering skating on any ice, whether it’s located in or outside of the City,” noted Director D’Agostino.

The City’s Department of Parks and Recreation is available to confirm for residents the frozen ice condition at a specific Woonsocket location. Prior to venturing out to skate, residents are encouraged to call the department at (401) 767-9287 and ask whether their destination contains solid ice.

“Snow and ice can be a challenge for outside exercise but Ice skating and sledding are a fun and exciting way to exercise in this type of weather. Bundle up!” said Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt.

Skating at Bernon Park is a wonderful option for residents to keep in mind as they search for locations with safely frozen ice. Despite the exceptionally frigid temperatures, not all naturally frozen ice is entirely solid or secure to skate upon.
