Former Red Sox 3B, Brady brother-in-law Kevin Youkilis says don’t bet against Pats QB

FOXBORO – One of Kevin Youkilis’ post-baseball playing ventures has led him down a road that one would think would clash with his famous brother-in-law’s healthy lifestyle.

Youkilis, he of Red Sox and PawSox fame, confirmed that Tom Brady has enjoyed a beer from his California-based Loma Brewing Company. On the surface, the idea of Brady downing a brew flies in the face of the training regimen/holistic lifestyle that the veteran Patriots quarterback swears by as part of the well-documented TB12 Method.

Anything for family, right? A 10year MLB veteran and two-time World Series champion, Youkilis is married to Brady’s sister, Julie. During the four-game penance that Brady had to serve in 2016 for “Deflategate,” Brady flew out to his home state and enjoyed a meal at Youkilis’ brewpub.

“The book and all that, it’s not 100 percent every single minute of every single day. He cheats ... having ice cream and things like that here and there,” said Youkilis. “He truly believes in that diet, but he’s definitely had our beer. He gave it the thumbs up.”

Youkilis had been in Brady’s company enough to know what makes the 40-year-old signal caller tick. Before the start of the 2017 season, the enthusiasm that Brady had for the new list of offensive play calls couldn’t have been more obvious during a conversation with Youkilis.

“He’s saying how excited he is because they have this play and that

play,” said Youkilis. “Tom is a football-holic. He just lives and breathes the game and makes sure to hold his teammates to a high standard just like he does to himself. That’s so key. The leaders of the team, if you’re not holding your teammates to the highest standard possible on the field, you’re never going to be a winner.”

Youkilis has a pretty good idea where Brady gets his competitive fire from – his mom Galynn, whose cancer battle and road to recovery has been well publicized. Youkilis went as far as to say that Galynn has two sides to her.

“Galynn, she’s gone through a lot. She’s a wonderful woman and a competitor herself. You meet her and she’s the sweetest lady, but she has those competitive juices going. She gets into the games like a linebacker,” said Youkilis. “That’s how she got through her bout with cancer and she’s doing great. She looks great and we’re just so blessed she’s in good health and good spirits. Being around her grandchildren, she’s having a blast.”

After the Patriots’ historic comeback over the Atlanta Falcons in last year’s Super Bowl, Brady posted a photo of his family on his per- sonal Instagram account. Youkilis was in the picture, wearing a blue TB12 hat.

Typically, Youkilis likes to make an in-person appearance to at least one Patriots game per season. Should New England take care of business against Tennessee in the AFC Divisional Round at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night and again in the AFC Championship next Sunday, Youkilis may well find himself in Minnesota for another first-hand look at Brady’s quest for another Lombardi Trophy.

“I never question the Patriots when it comes to a playoff run,” said Youkilis, who when he’s not brewing beer is serving as a parttime scout and player development consultant for the Chicago Cubs. “What they’ve done there is pretty special.”
