Clippers defeat Novans to claim division title
PROVIDENCE – Senior captain Chris Choquette captured two events and placed runner-up in another to propel Cumberland High to a pair of relatively easy Northern Division triumphs over Woonsocket (65.543.5) and St. Raphael (65-44) at the Providence Career & Technical Academy fieldhouse on Monday.
Choquette exhibited his leadership, reigning in the 55-meter hurdles (7.83) and long jump (20-2 ¾) while settling for second on the 55 dash (6.89, only .06 behind SRA sophomore Jake Lamothe). He also finished third in the high jump (5-6).
Ironically, the Clippers won only four of the 13 events of the program but managed to reign. Freshman Fenson Hensley took the 300 (40.35) and junior Nate Rogers the 1,000 (2:52.19) to help the cause.
The Villa Novans topped the Saints due in part to a sweep of the relays. The 4x200 contingent of Isaiah Karpinski, Joseh Correia, Manny Gomes and Hezekiah Adeyeye won in 1:38.28, while the 4x400 quartet of Nasin Nash, Nick Iarussi, Gomes and Johnathan Upshur hustled to a 3:49.34 clocking.
Iarussi snared the high jump (6-2) and Upshur placed second, and Upshur and Correia mustered runner-up and third in the long jump.
Logan Coles grabbed the shot put (421 ½) and Derin Paskanik the 25-pound weight throw (54-8).
For SRA, sophomore Nasavell Medeiros earned double-winner status in the 1,500 (4:29.36) and 3,000 (9:36.35), while Lamothe edged Choquette in the 55 dash (6.83) and Darius Kipyego took the 600 (1:28.33).
** 4x200 relay (1:44.94).
Plamondon tacked on victories in the 55 hurdles (8.89) and high jump (5-4), while freshman Ryan Slaney took the 1,500 (4:39.04) and classmate Ben Happenny the 3,000 (10:41.69).
Central Falls sophomore Leonardo DaVeiga defeated Ciullo in the 55 dash (6.70), and also combined with Kevin Delgado, Artemio Guzman and Alhagie Gai to snag the 4x400 relay (3:46.76). Those helped the Warriors wallop Shea, 89-15.
Adilson Gomes S. DaSilva added a win in the 1,000 (2:51.64), while senior Ethan Carnaghan swept the shot put (31-0) and 25-pound weight throw (37-0 ½).
Shea’s lone triumph came from talented senior Helton Delgado in the 600 (1:32.35).
