WOONSOCKET — The Mount St. Charles baseball team’s five-game homestand came to a frustrating end Saturday afternoon against Smithfield.

The Mounties led by a run after the first inning thanks to RBI singles from catcher Trey Bourque and Everett Misto, but the visiting Sentinels answered with runs in every inning except for the sixth to return home with a 14-6 Division II victory.

“Early on, we didn’t get the big hits when we needed them,” Mount St. Charles coach Paul Jacques said. “We had runners on in scoring position and we didn’t get the big hits. After that, Smithfield took it to us. With a young team, there are going to be a lot of mistakes and we made some again. The boys have been working hard in practice and that’s all we can ask for.”

Mount St. Charles (6-6 Division II) has now dropped its last two games in lopsided fashion after Division II title contender Chariho made the long ride north to earn a 11-3 victory Wednesday afternoon. The Mounties will look to bounce back Tuesday afternoon at Wawaloam Field in Exeter against Exeter-West Greenwich.

Jacques didn’t indicate who would start the game on the mound, but his options are Alex Gonfrade, Ryan Kenney and Tim Kenney. Saturday, Isaiah Lee earned the start and took the loss after allowing five runs in four innings of work. Lee struck out two Sentinels.

“We’ll come ready to practice [Sunday],” Jacques said. “It was a tough week with Chariho and Smithfield, especially with the way Chariho hit the ball. It will be nice to start fresh with a new week on Sunday and go from there.”

Smithfield (7-4 Division II) has now won three straight games since suffering a onerun loss to St. Raphael at Vets Park last week. Junior Jake McDonough allowed just two runs in six innings of work, while senior Cameron Souve scored three runs.

Jake Meisner scored the home side’s final run on a ground out by Tim Kenney.
